IUPUI Steals One From Milwaukee In Five

Grabowski ties career-high with 32 digs

MILWAUKEEJess Grabowski, Carmen Heilemann and Shanon Volpis all tallied career highs but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to IUPUI Friday night from the Klotsche Center.

The Jags (7-21, 4-10 Horizon) were able to do just enough late to fight off Milwaukee (8-18, 7-6 Horizon) for the five-set win in extras, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 17-15.

Heilemann had another strong match for MKE with a match-high 22 kills – a new career high – while hitting .356.

Shanon Volpis also set a new career best with 16 kills while hitting .400 to go with three blocks in her final home match for the Panthers.

Louise Kiekhofer (13) and Kylie Wilks (11) each also reached double-digit kills on the night, with Wilks making in a double-double with 14 digs.

Grabowski continued to rack up impressive numbers during her first collegiate season, tying her career high with a match-high 32 digs. That marks the second time she'll etch her name in the record books this season as that mark again ranks her fifth in program history for a five-set match.

Milwaukee's setters each notched double-doubles, as Jenn Dore had a season-high 41 assists to go with 11 digs, while Rylie Vaughn added 25 assists and 12 digs. Kailynn Mongan also added 13 digs in the loss.

IUPUI – fresh off a win over league-leading Cleveland State on Wednesday – was led by Hannah Oehlberg, who finished with 13 kills and 16 digs.

It all came down to the decisive fifth set. Milwaukee found itself behind early and down 14-11 late. Abby Koenen started the rally with a big kill, followed by one each from Wilks and Heilemann and suddenly it was all knotted up at 14. After trading serves, the Klotsche faithful were on their feet, but the Jags were able to find a way to pull out their second-straight upset win.

Friday's match was the final home contest for seniors Shanon Volpis and Sara Kartalovic, who were honored before the match.

Up next, the Panthers travel to Cleveland, Ohio for a Sunday matinee with the Vikings scheduled for a 1 pm Central first serve.
