Milwaukee Powers Past Parkside In Exhibition

Walstad nets 18 in debut

MILWAUKEE – All 13 players scored as the Milwaukee women's basketball team claimed an 84-69 win over Parkside Thursday evening from the Klotsche Center in the Panthers lone exhibition game of the year.

Four Panthers scored in double figures as MKE used a 25-6 run spanning the first and second quarters to claim complete control early and never look back.

"It's always great to get to play so many people, and that's what games like this are great for," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We got to see all of our freshmen on the court tonight, and they did some nice things. I thought Megan Walstad and Sydney Levy had very strong performances in their first collegiate action.

"Our seniors were also very important for us tonight. Akaylah Hayes and Ryaen Johnson – they were our leaders tonight and it showed.

"Parkside did a lot of good things and they gave us some things that we'll need to work on going forward. We're looking forward to doing just that as we get ready to start the season down at Indiana."

Walstad finished with 18 points in her first collegiate action, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in a very strong showing.

Hayes stuffed the stat sheet Thursday, netting 15 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks in just 19 minutes.

Levy buried four from deep to finish with 14 points, while Johnson also reached double figures with 11 points and four rebounds.

Brandi Bisping just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.

Alisha Murphy led the way for Parkside with 13 points.

Leading 13-12 with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter, Milwaukee was simply dominant for the next 10 minutes of action, rattling off a big run. Levy started things off with back-to-back threes before Hayes hit a jumper from the wing just before the end of the first frame.

Freshman Emma Wittmershaus got on the board to start the scoring in the second before four straight from Bisping suddenly made it 28-14 for the Panthers. Sydney Staver got in on the action with a bucket before another triple from Levy stretched the lead to 33-16.

MKE led by as many as 22 in this one before finishing with a 15-point edge in the final scoring column.

The Panthers will now gear up for the regular-season opener, set for Wednesday, Nov. 7 in a rematch of last year's WNIT Second Round matchup at Indiana from Assembly Hall.
