League-Leading Vikings Survive Panthers’ Upset Bid

Dore, Vaughn both turn in double-doubles

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team nearly pulled off a big win over league-leading Cleveland State before ultimately coming up just short in a 3-1 loss Sunday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Coming off a big road win on Wednesday, MKE opened up Sunday's match with a convincing performance in the opening frame and had plenty of strong performances, but just couldn't find that finishing blow in falling, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18.

"I think this match was evident that we have the pieces to win, we just lack sustainment throughout matches right now," head coach Susie Johnson said. "Cleveland State is a team that has won year after year, and we have to figure out a way to compete all the way to the end in every single set."

Milwaukee had a strong defensive showing Sunday, racking up 70 total digs as a team. Freshman Jess Grabowski led that charge with a team-high 16 digs Sunday, while Kailynn Mongan added 14, Jenn Dore 13 and Rylie Vaughn 12.

Dore and Vaughn both tallied double-doubles on the day, as Dore notched 22 assists on the day and Vaughn another 15.

The Panthers also turned in 10 blocks in Sunday's four-setter, with senior Shanon Volpis leading the team with six.

Milwaukee's offense was a well-balanced attack in this one, with Carmen Heilemann leading the way with nine kills. Shanon Volpis and Abby Koenen each had eight and Kylie Wilks added another seven.

Trinniti Hall led Cleveland State (12-6, 6-0 Horizon) with 15 kills in the close road win.

Milwaukee showed it was ready for the league leaders right out of the gates in a highly competitive opening set. After the Vikings jumped ahead for an 11-7 lead, the Panthers answered right back to take a 14-13 edge after a block from Heilemann and Volpis. Things would continue to go back-and-forth as CSU went up 23-21 late, only to see Milwaukee rally for four-straight points to take the opener.

After Cleveland State leveled things up in the second, Milwaukee again showed their fight in both the third and fourth.

In the third set alone, the lead traded hands five times in addition to 11 ties. MKE actually led 16-14 right around the midway point, but the Vikings were able to get in a rhythm late to put things away.

It was much of the same in the fourth. The Panthers jumped ahead, 9-6 after a kill from Louise Kiekhofer, but CSU once again responded with a 5-0 to take their first lead of the frame. Milwaukee showed zero quit on the day, staying right with the league leaders and drawing within two at 19-17 after a kill from Koenen. But a big run late was able to close this one out.

MKE will continue its five-match homestand with two more from the Klotsche Center next weekend, starting Friday at 6 pm when Youngstown State comes to campus.
