Volleyball Rolls In Home Sweep Of YSU

Win moves Milwaukee to sole possession of fifth place in league standings

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Jess Grabowski had a match-high 21 digs and the Panthers offense was extremely efficient as the Milwaukee volleyball team earned a well-deserved 3-0 sweep of Youngstown State Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee hit a season-best .316 on the attack and got contributions from all over with the big win, 25-15, 25-13, 25-21.

"Winning is always a great thing and our team earned this win tonight," head coach Susie Johnson said. "Jess was amazing defensively; they (Youngstown State) really hit at her a lot tonight and she came up big for us. And then offensively, it wasn't one person for us again, it was a total team effort, which is exactly what we want. We were very effective tonight in a variety of areas and that showed."

Grabowski's defense lead the way for Milwaukee, turning in another stellar performance and leading all players with 21 digs on the night. Milwaukee's Kailynn Mongan (10) was the only other player to reach double-digit digs in Friday's quick sweep.

Offensively, Jenn Dore and Rylie Vaughn once again ran a very efficient attack, dishing out a combined 37 assists in the match that lasted just one hour, 23 minutes.

Carmen Heilemann led the way at the net with 11 kills on just 15 attempts for a career-high .600 hitting clip. Makenzie Mroczenski turned in nine kills and Abby Koenen another seven. Mroczenski also added another three blocks, as did Koenen and senior Shanon Volpis.

Milwaukee got going right out of the gates in the opening frame and never looked back. An ace from Shanon Volpis made it 8-3, swelling that lead all the way to 20-7 after a block from Volpis and Kylie Wilks. YSU was able to respond with a run of their own to cut the gap to 20-15, but MKE made the necessary adjustments and finished the match on a 5-0 run for the early lead.

It was much of the same in the second. A kill from Koenen made it 7-2 right out of the chute, and a block by Shari Volpis and Mroczenski built things up to 21-10. This time, the Panthers never allowed the Penguins the chance for a rally and finished things off for the 2-0 lead.

Milwaukee had to work in the third. The back-and-forth final frame featured 11 ties and three lead changes. YSU went ahead 16-15 after a kill from Valor Haggerty before the Panthers went on a momentum-swinging run. Heilemann started things off with three consecutive kills and another from Mroczenski forced a Youngstown State timeout. YSU was able to draw back to level at 19-19 before MKE used another strong surge to finally put this one out of reach.

The Panthers are right back in action Saturday with a 4 pm showdown with Oakland from the Klotsche Center.
