MKE Takes Down Oakland In Marathon Match

Panthers notch big league win

MILWAUKEEKylie Wilks notched six of her team-high 14 kills in the fifth set to help lead the Milwaukee volleyball team to a 3-2 win in a marathon match with Oakland Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

After dominating for the first two sets, Oakland (6-13, 2-6 Horizon) found some rhythm to force a fifth set, only to see Milwaukee (5-16, 4-4 Horizon) dig deep to flip the momentum back in their favor for the big win, 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 14-25, 21-19.

"I'm really proud of the way this team battled back today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We came out very strong to start, and then they (Oakland) made some adjustments and we had to work hard to get that momentum back. There was plenty of adversity for our team today and we found a way to fight through that for an important win."

Kylie Wilks was one of four players to finish with double-digit kills on the day for MKE, tallying 14 for the match – including six in that final frame as she took over late. Shanon Volpis finished with a season-high 13 kills, Carmen Heilemann added another 12 and Shari Volpis 11.

The offense ran smoothly once again thanks in part to the great passing of setters Jenn Dore and Rylie Vaughn, with Dore dishing out 27 assists and Vaughn another 26.

Defensively, Jess Grabowski came up big time and again to finish with 26 digs on the day. Wilks and Dore both each added 11 to each claim a double-double, while sophomore Kailynn Mongan added another nine digs.

MKE also racked up 14 blocks on the afternoon, with Makenzie Mroczenski tying her career high with eight. Shanon Volpis added another six and Wilks a season-high four.

Jamie Walling led the way for Oakland with 23 kills on 57 attempts.

Milwaukee started Saturday's match right where the left off after Friday's 3-0 sweep of Youngstown State. After an ace from Vaughn made it 13-7, OU called its first timeout but still couldn't solve Milwaukee's early success. A block by Mroczenski and Wilks made it 21-11 Panthers before closing things out with a big first-set win.

MKE kept things rolling and blitzed the Golden Grizzlies to the tune of an 8-0 start to set two, highlighted by three early kills and a pair of blocks by Mroczenski. An ace by Dore stretched the lead to 17-8. After OU was able to claw back to within three, Milwaukee finished the set on a 7-2 run to go up 2-0.

Tied at 23-all in the third, Oakland was able to find a way to eke out the final two points to take the third and start a shift in the match.

After Oakland claimed the fourth, it all came down to the decisive fifth set. Falling behind 5-2, Milwaukee found a way to flip the momentum back in their favor with a big run of their own, going up 9-5 after a big kill by Wilks. The two teams traded blows and went well into extras, with MKE falling behind 19-18. Facing match point, Wilks added another kill to pull things level. Milwaukee earned a crucial side out off an OU error before Mroczenski closed things out with another kill, getting mobbed by her teammates in celebration of the big win.

The 2-0 performance by the Panthers over the weekend is significant as they now move to 4-4 in league play and now hold at least a one-match lead for fifth place in the very tight league standings.

The Panthers will wrap up their five-match homestand with two more games inside the Klotsche Center next weekend, starting Friday when Northern Kentucky comes to campus for a 6 pm contest.
