Mroczenski Powers Panthers To Comeback Win

Sophomore middle knocks home career-high 20 kills

MILWAUKEEMakenzie Mroczenski pounded home a career-high 20 kills to lead the Milwaukee volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2, comeback win over Northern Kentucky Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

The win was a big one for Milwaukee (6-16, 5-4 Horizon) in the league standings, putting together a massive comeback after dropping the first two sets for the team's third consecutive victory.

"What a swing of emotions in this match. We started out a little slow, but we made some great adjustments and showed some incredible fight through some challenging moments to get a really big win," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Hats off to Makenzie tonight. She was tremendous and we couldn't have done this without her performance tonight."

Mroczenski racked up that career-high 20 kills while hitting .340 overall, adding a match-high six blocks as she was dominant at the net all night long.

Kylie Wilks turned in another double-double with 14 kills, while tying her career-high 21 digs.

Freshman Abby Koenen also reached double-digit kills with 11 while hitting .450 to go with four blocks.

Rylie Vaughn and Jenn Dore combined to run a great offense with a combined 61 assists on the night.

Defensively, four Panthers reached double figures. Sophomore Kailynn Mongan led all players with a career-high 25 on the night. Freshman Jess Grabowski racked up another 19, while Dore also tallied a double-double with 13.

Haley Libs led Northern Kentucky (13-7, 5-4 Horizon) with 25 kills and 21 digs.

After a marathon first four sets that were split, it all came down to the fifth. NKU established the first separation of the set with a block to go up 8-6. Milwaukee responded in resounding fashion, taking over from that point on in what proved to be a dominant finish. A block by Carmen Heilemann and Shanon Volpis tied things up at 8-8, before Heilemann made it 12-9 with a kill. A Norse timeout wouldn't change anything. Heilemann added another kill before teaming up with Jenna Miller for another block. An NKU error closed things out as the Klotsche fans roared for the big comeback win.

MKE closes out its homestand Saturday at 4 pm when Wright State comes to the Klotsche Center.
