MKE Volleyball Claims Fourth Straight Win

Heilemann, Volpis notch career highs to lead Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE Carmen Heilemann and Shanon Volpis each tallied career highs in kills as the Milwaukee volleyball won its fourth consecutive match Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Wright State from inside the Klotsche Center.

The win moves Milwaukee to 7-16 overall and 6-4 in Horizon-League play as they continue to climb the ladder in the league standings.

"We're playing really well right now," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "This is what a team does – not everyone played amazing today, but that's not what we're looking for. We're looking for a total team effort, and we got that again today. As a coach, it's very rewarding to see that and for your team to battle through the adversity of a tough match and find a way to win."

Heilemann led Milwaukee with a career-high 17 kills, hitting an impressive .324. Shanon Volpis also racked up a career high in kills with 15, hitting an outstanding .484 to go with a pair of blocks and five digs.

Defensively, the Panthers racked up an impressive 72 digs as a team. Jess Grabowski led the charge with a match-high 23, while Kailynn Mongan added 15 and Kylie Wilks another 11.

Jenn Dore and Rylie Vaughn combined to run another efficient offense Saturday, teaming up for 48 assists.

Teddie Sauer led the way for Wright State with 18 kills and 14 digs in the loss.

After splitting the first two sets, the Panthers used a big run late to claim a big win in the third. Up 19-16, Mongan turned in the fifth ace of the frame for Milwaukee followed by a big block from Jenna Miller and Wilks. A WSU timeout couldn't stem the Panther tide as they closed things out for the 25-19 win.

The fourth set proved incredibly even until late, with 13 total ties in the frame. Level at 22-all, MKE was able to find some separation. Louise Kiekhofer notched one of her four kills on the day, followed by a kill from Miller to set the stage. Wilks finished things off with her second kill of the day to send the Panthers home with another big win.

Milwaukee closes out their five-match homestand with four straight wins. Up next, the Panthers head to Oakland next Friday for a 5 pm Central match.
