Volleyball Earns Road Sweep Of IUPUI

Team effort leads Milwaukee to big road win

INDIANAPOLIS – The Milwaukee volleyball team turned in a total team effort, leading to a 3-0 sweep of IUPUI Wednesday afternoon from The Jungle.

After a marathon first set, the Panthers established control as the match went along en route to the convincing win, 30-28, 25-22, 25-15.

"This was a one-hundred percent a team victory. Everybody was bought in and did their job," head coach Susie Johnson said. "This is what we've known our team is capable of all season. Today, we just went out and showed it from start to finish."

Louise Kiekhofer led Milwaukee with 12 kills, while Kylie Wilks also reached double figures with 11.

Jenn Dore and Rylie Vaughn combined to dish out 43 of Milwaukee's 48 assists on the day as the offense operated smoothly all match long.

The Panther defense was also very strong, with Wilks leading the way with 18 digs, freshman libero Jess Grabowski tallying 16 and sophomore Kailynn Mongan adding another 14 in her third start of the season.

Senior Maggie Gibson led IUPUI with 13 kills and 15 digs.

After falling behind early to start the midweek road match, the Panthers called timeout and quickly flipped the script. Trailing by three the majority of the opening frame, MKE tied leveled things up at 18-18 after a kill from Jenna Miller. Milwaukee took its first lead at 23-22 and, despite being forced deep into extras, would never trail again before back-to-back kills from freshmen Kleja Cerniauskaite and Abby Koenen closed out the opener with a win.

The next two sets were far less dramatic. In a close second set, the Panthers established separation late before sophomore Carmen Heilemann sealed it with one of her eight kills to give MKE a 2-0 lead at the break.

Set number three proved to be a fun one for the Black and Gold. Tied at 11, Milwaukee went on a 9-3 run to blow things open and jump ahead 20-14. Maddie Dean added her 10th kill of the match to close the gap to five, but the Panthers then rattled off five straight to close things out and head home with the sweep.

MKE returns home this weekend to start a five-match homestand this Sunday, playing host to league-leading Cleveland State at 2 pm from the Klotsche Center.
