Vaughn turns in double-double

YOUNGSTOWN, OhioRylie Vaughn had a career-high 17 digs to go with 17 assists to help the Milwaukee volleyball team to a big bounce-back win over Youngstown State Saturday afternoon from the Beeghly Center.

After dropping the first set, Milwaukee (8-17, 7-5 Horizon) rebounded and got timely performances from a number of individuals for the win, 18-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-16.

"This wasn't easy. I'm proud of this team to find a way to win this match," head coach Susie Johnson said. "This particular trip is a challenging one, having lost a tough one last night and then dealing with travel. We started slow, but I'm really proud of the way we were able to figure it out in the match and make the adjustments. Everyone on the team contributed to this win."

Carmen Heilemann led the Panthers with 15 kills on the day. Kylie Wilks and Shanon Volpis each had 10, while Louise Kiekhofer added another nine.

Jenn Dore led Milwaukee's offense with 25 assists to go with Vaughn's 17.

Defensively, Jess Grabowski finished with a match-high 23 digs. Vaughn added a career-high 17, while Kailynn Mongan tallied another 14.

At the net, freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite had a match-high four blocks, while classmate Abby Koenen added another three.

Margaux Thompson had 13 kills and 16 digs to lead the way for Youngstown State (7-18, 1-11 Horizon).

After dropping the opener, Milwaukee bounced back in the big way in the second. The Panthers jumped out to a 9-4 early lead and never looked back. A kill from Cerniauskaite made it 17-10 before Dore closed things out with an ace.

The third proved to be much more closely contested, but the Panthers came up big in the closing moments. Tied at 23-all, Wilks notched one of her 10 kills on the afternoon to give MKE the edge before Shanon Volpis ended it, again with a Panther ace.

After falling behind early in the fourth, Milwaukee rebounded to close this one out. The Panthers used an 8-1 run to jump ahead 16-9 and made it 22-13 after a kill from Volpis. Jenna Miller and Heilemann sent MKE home with the win with a big block – one of seven on the day for the Black & Gold.

The Panthers return home next weekend for their final home match of the season. Friday will mark Senior Day for MKE as they take on IUPUI Friday at 6 pm from the Klotsche Center.
