Panthers Defense Smothers Flames In 59-44 Win

Johnson, Hayes provide big spark off the bench

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team's defense was on full display Sunday afternoon as the Panthers smothered visiting UIC all game long for a 59-44 win from the Klotsche Center.

A close game at the break, the Panthers (16-6, 7-3 Horizon) regrouped and played lockdown defense nearly the entirety of the final 20 minutes for their second sizeable win over UIC (7-14, 0-10 Horizon) in a 13-day span.

"It's the second half of conference play," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Every team in our league is very competitive, so we've got to be ready to play for each opponent and our team really did lock in. Now, we didn't come out with the energy and enthusiasm that I would like at the start of the game, but we got them motivated at half time and they found a way to turn it up – especially some players off of our bench."

Bailey Farley again led the team in scoring with 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.

Jenny Lindner was solid on the boards and finished with a game-high eight rebounds to go with 13 points, while Steph Kostowicz had 10 points and four boards.

Akaylah Hayes and Ryaen Johnson came off the bench in the second half and lifted Milwaukee with their play, finishing with a combined eight points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals, providing the spark their team needed in the final 20 minutes.

UIC was led by Taylor Toney, finishing with a game-high 20 points and connecting for nine of her team's 19 made field goals on the night.

Milwaukee jumped out of the gates early with four quick point from Jamie Reit and a three ball from Farley for a quick 9-2 start to quickly for a UIC timeout. But, the Flames hung around in the first half and even led 24-21 late in the second before a 5-0 Panther run to end the half with a 26-24 lead.

From there it was all about Milwaukee's defense.

Leading 30-29, the Panthers went on an 11-0 run that was more about their defense, holding UIC without a field goal for over six minutes.

Up by four entering the fourth, UWM went on a 14-5 run over a five-minute span to erase any thoughts of an upset in this one.

The Panthers – entering the game ranked 10th in the nation in free-throw percentage – iced the game away from the line, going 11-12 in the fourth quarter alone and 21-27 overall for the game.

Milwaukee's defense held UIC to just 35.2 percent shooting overall and just 20 percent (3-15) from behind the arc.

UWM got back to its rebounding ways in claiming a 35-24 edge in that category to go along with a 26-16 edge in points in the paint.

The five-game homestand continues next week with two more games at the Klotsche Center, starting Thursday at 7pm when Wright State comes to campus for another battle atop the conference standings.
