Defense Pushes Panthers To Another Big Win

Lindner with a career-high 16 rebounds in the win

MILWAUKEEJenny Lindner scored 23 points to go with a career-high 16 rebounds as the Milwaukee women's basketball team took down Wright State, 59-53 Thursday evening from the Klotsche Center.

In another battle atop the conference standings, the Panthers (17-6, 8-3 Horizon) shot 47.5 percent for the game and limited the Raiders (16-7, 7-4 Horizon) to just 30.9 percent – their lowest shooting performance on the year.

The win is even more impressive for UWM in that it is the third over a team in the Mid-Major Top-25 poll on the season (Wright State entered Thursday's game #19 in this week's rankings), which Milwaukee did Thursday with senior Steph Kostowicz on the bench nursing an injury.

"This was a huge win for our program," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "The energy and the focus that our team came out with is exactly what you expect towards the second half of conference play. It's tough when you have one of your better players sitting on the bench, but we had a lot of people that stepped up in her absence.

"The biggest thing that I'm most impressed with is our defense tonight. This is a team (Wright State) that is one of the better scoring teams in the league. They put up a lot of numbers on some really great teams out there. To keep them in that low-50 range is a huge accomplishment and we did it by communication and just really buying into the game plan."

Lindner led all players with 23 points and a career-high 16 rebounds while tying her season high with 39 minutes played. She was awfully efficient from the floor, finishing 6-of-9 and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

"She has this in her," Rechlicz said of Lindner's big night. "You've seen it in stretches during the season, but she just put us on her back tonight. She didn't want to lose the game. We played her 39 minutes and you couldn't tell; she looked fresh from start to finish.

"And our team did a great job of finding her. I thought that was really impressive down the stretch is that they wanted her to have the ball because they knew that she would find a way to score for us."

Jamie Reit hit some big shots early and finished with 14 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds.

Bailey Farley scored nine points and Lizzie Odegard finished with five points, six rebounds and a block in her second-career start.

Chelsea Welch – the Horizon League's leading scorer – finished with 17 points on 6-17 shooting to lead the way for Wright State.

Milwaukee blitzed the Raiders right out of the gate with a 10-0 run not even two minutes into the contest. Farley opened the game with a three, followed by buckets by Lindner and Reit before a triple from Odegard, forcing a very quick timeout from WSU.

Wright State would slowly inch their way closer as the game went along, expending a lot of energy to take their first lead of the game early in the fourth at 46-45.

Milwaukee answered back in a big way, with a pair of free throws from Farley and Lindner sandwiching a jumper by Reit for a quick 6-0 run to go back up 51-48 with just 3:17 left.

After a Wright State free throw, Milwaukee needed a bucket in a big way on their next possession and got just that from their senior leader on the night. Lindner hauled in a close-range rebound and went right back up to make it 53-49 with less than two minutes left.

From there, the Panthers would ice the game away from the charity stripe. Entering the game ranked 11th in the nation as a team from the line, Milwaukee lived up to its billing – going 15-for-18 as a team in this one, including a perfect 10-for-10 in the final frame.

Milwaukee once again won the highly anticipated rebounding battle, 35-27, and held the lead for nearly 36 minutes after that strong start.

Up next, Northern Kentucky comes to campus for a Saturday matinee scheduled for 2pm from the Klotsche Center.
