Jags Snip Panther Win Streak At The Buzzer

Farley finishes with 18 points in close loss

MILWAUKEE – Tamya Sims' runner bounced its way in at the buzzer as IUPUI was able to squeak out a 70-68 win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

In a highly anticipated battle between two of the Horizon League's top programs, the game lived up to its billing with two lead changes and a tie in the final 1:19 alone before Sims' heroics at the buzzer to halt Milwaukee's (15-6, 6-3 Horizon) win streak at five games.

After trailing by 10 with just over five minutes left, Milwaukee stormed back and took a 65-64 lead with 1:19 left on a great feed from Kelsey Cunningham to Lizzie Odegard.

IUPUI (16-4, 8-1 Horizon) was able to find a pair of baskets to go back up by three with 15 seconds left on the clock before Bailey Farley was fouled on a deep three-point attempt, calmly drilling all three of her free throws to knot things up at 68-all with 4.2 left.

After a Jaguar timeout, Sims got the inbound at the top of the key, drove right and threw up a contested scoop shot that bounced off the back of the iron three times before falling through the hoop as time expired.

"It's two really great teams going head-to-head," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "(IUPUI head coach) Austin (Parkinson) and I talked before the game and the first thing we said was this is going to be a battle. It's two teams that want to win, for one, but also have that physical toughness."

"For most of the game, we played really well and really hard. But we had some really bad stretches and some really not-so-smart defensive plays. Stuff that we have to learn to translate mid-game when we're making adjustments."

Farley led Milwaukee with 18 points, while Jamie Reit (11), Lizzie Odegard (10) and Jenny Lindner (10) all also reached double digits in scoring Friday.

Kelsey Cunningham came off the bench for six points, three assists and three steals, while freshman Sydney Staver had a big three late to go with three assists and two steals.

Macee Williams led the Jags with a game-high 22 points as all five IUPUI starters scored all 70 of the team's points.

After a face-paced first quarter saw Milwaukee hold an 18-15 led, the defenses took over in the second as the teams hit the half tied at 27-all.

The Jags connected on five three-pointers in the third to go up 47-37 with 3:54 left in the frame before UWM pushed back with a 10-3 run of its own to trail by just three after three.

Milwaukee couldn't find their rhythm in the early going of the fourth, tallying just a pair of Lindner free throws before Reit's three from the corner with 5:10 left started the comeback to lead to the end of the game fireworks.

Both teams shot the ball at a high percentage for the majority of this one, with UWM finishing with a 54.5-49.1 edge.

For just the second time all season, Milwaukee lost the rebounding battle on the night, 30-24.

The Panthers outscored IUPUI off the bench, 19-0, but lost the battle in the paint, 38-26.

Milwaukee's five-game homestand continues Sunday when UIC comes to the Klotsche Center for a 2pm contest.
