Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dominant Second-Half Sends UWM Home With 23-Point Win

Farley with 20 points, career-high three blocks

CHICAGO – Eleven total players finished in the scoring column as the Milwaukee women's basketball team used an impressive second-half effort to cruise to a 76-53 win over UIC Monday from the UIC Pavilion.

A four-point game at the break, Milwaukee (13-5, 4-2 Horizon) opened the second half on a 10-0 run and never looked back for their third win in five days.

"I was really proud with how focused we came out," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "It's one of those situations where you're on your third game in five days, you have a (scouting report) that you just gave them 24 hours ago and you hope that they can retain as much information as possible.

"I was really proud with the effort that we came out with. We were diving for loose balls from the start and we just carried that through all 40 minutes."

Bailey Farley turned in an impressive performance, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 7-11 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high three blocks.

Jenny Lindner – who was named last week's Horizon League Player of the Week just an hour before tipoff – picked up right where she left off with 17 points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in just 25 minutes.

Jamie Reit chipped in with eight points. Steph Kostowicz added seven points, seven rebounds and five blocks and Sydney Staver came off the bench for six points and two rebounds in seven minutes.

UIC (7-10, 0-6 Horizon) was led by Taylor Toney with 16 points on 6-16 shooting.

After the Flames scored the opening basket of the game, Milwaukee responded with an 11-0 run to instantly take control. UWM would lead by as many as 10 early and finished the opening frame with a 21-14 edge after five consecutive points from Farley.

A hot shooting spurt from the Flames closed Milwaukee's lead to just 40-36 at the half, before the Panthers once again responded in emphatic fashion to open the third. Reit drilled a three-pointer, followed by a fastbreak layup by Lindner. Another three from Farley and a transition jumper by Reit and the lead exploded to 14 in an instant, forcing a UIC timeout.

From there, it was all Milwaukee.

A pair of Kelsey Cunningham free throws made it a 16-point game before a jumper from Staver stretched things to 65-47 early in the fourth. Alyssa Fischer made it a 20-point game before Brandi Bisping's two free throws ballooned the lead to 25 with one minute to play.

The Panthers finished with an impressive 22 assists – five of which came from freshman McKaela Schmelzer.

"That's probably my favorite statistic (from this game) is just how much we're sharing the basketball," Rechlicz said. "We have such an unselfish team, and that just makes us hard to guard. We've got a ton of scorers out there and on any given night it could be anybody's night. That's one of the things I love about coaching this team is that they are just so selfless."

UWM once again won the rebounding battle, 38-35, dominated the points in the paint, 34-16, and had a sizable 22-12 edge in points off the bench.

The team finished with a season-high nine blocked shots Monday, tying the second-most in a game in Division I history.

Milwaukee also held the Flames to just seven made field goals in the second half, with their pressure defense limiting UIC to just 21-percent shooting (7-33) over the final 20 minutes.

Up next, the Black & Gold will continue their busy stretch with a trip across the lake for a Thursday matchup with Oakland at 6pm Central.
