Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Reit’s Buzzer Beater Sends Milwaukee Home With Another Win

Kostowicz notches another double-double

MILWAUKEE Jamie Reit's jumper went through the hoop as time expired to give the Milwaukee women's basketball team a 62-61 win over Youngstown State Saturday from the Klotsche Center.

A back-and-forth battle that featured 11 lead changes saw Milwaukee (12-5, 3-2 Horizon) score the final seven points of the game to collect their second straight win.

"I give a lot of credit to Youngstown State, because they must have seen that play," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We haven't used that play all year and I was waiting for the moment to use it. It was a decoy play for Bailey (Farley) to come off. Steph (Kostowicz) took it baseline, which is how we drew it up.

"I thought Jenny had incredible fill action on the back side…she just couldn't get her hands on the ball, so it became this loose-ball situation and time was running down. Jamie just scooped it up and – being the shooter that she is – nailed the shot.

"Big moment for a sophomore. Huge."

Reit – the hero of the game – finished a perfect 3-3 from the floor with eight points in 19 minutes.

Steph Kostowicz notched her 28th career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks and one steal.

Jenny Lindner just missed another double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Alyssa Fischer came off the bench for eight points in just 11 minutes, while Bailey Farley added another seven points to go with two assists, one steal and one block.

Lizzie Odegard was held out of the scoring column but brought it six rebounds to go with a steal and a block.

Sarah Cash poured in a season-high 28 points for Youngstown State (6-11, 2-4 Horizon) to lead the way for the Penguins.

UWM led by seven early in the fourth quarter, only to see YSU shoot lights out the majority of the final frame, making eight straight field goals over a six-minute span to flip a 49-42 deficit into a 61-55 lead with 3:28 to play.

The Panthers then made a switch from the sideline that proved to shift the momentum back in Milwaukee's favor for good.

"I give a lot of credit to (assistant coach) Anya Covington in that moment, because she had made the suggestion to go to our zone," Rechlicz said of the late game defensive switch. "I was a little hesitant about it…but I listened and I give her a lot of credit for that. We went zone and they (Youngstown State) struggled to get into a flow at that point. We ended up pulling out three stops in a row, which enabled Jenny to come down and hit a three and us to make a couple big plays down the stretch."

After the first big stop, Lindner drilled an open three from the win the gap to 61-58 with 1:48 to play.

Another stout defensive series by UWM led to a pair of Kostowicz free throws on the other end to make it a one-point game with 49 seconds left on the clock.

Milwaukee again forced a tough shot by YSU and Lindner hauled in the rebound to set up the final possession before Reit sent the Black & Gold home with the win.

Reit's game winner was actually the fourth buzzer-beater for Milwaukee of the ball game. Kostowicz beat the third-quarter buzzer with a close-range jumper, while Fischer and Lindner both beat the shot clock for big buckets in the final frame.

The Panthers once again won the rebounding battle, 42-26, and finished with noticeable edges in second-chance points (13-2) and points off the bench (12-2).

UWM will play its third game in five days on Monday when they make the short drive to Chicago for a 1pm matinee at UIC.
