Lindner’s Double-Double Sparks Another Panther Comeback

UWM wins thriller in front of 2,610 fans

MILWAUKEE – Four players scored in double figures as the Milwaukee women's basketball team flipped a 15-point deficit into a 79-72 win over Cleveland State Thursday in front of 2,610 fans on "School Day" at the Klotsche Center.

After coming back from down 15 to CSU (11-5, 3-2 Horizon) in the first half, the Panthers (11-5, 2-2 Horizon) trailed by two with just over two minutes remaining when Bailey Farley drilled back-to-back three's to put Milwaukee up for good in the big home win.

"The energy in here today was tremendous. A lot of shout outs to the kids who came today to support our team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We didn't really start the game off very well. A lot of credit to Cleveland because of that. But, once we started getting into a rhythm, the sixth man – our crowd really bought into it."

Jenny Lindner notched the 16th double-double of her career to lead the way, finishing with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and three steals.

"To be honest with you, it was Jenny Lindner – she flipped the switch for us," Rechlicz said. "She became extremely aggressive and started going after offensive rebounds. We found her and got her the ball. Our team was really great at that today – feeding the hot hand. I always say it's like a coin machine, just keep feeding it and Jenny had it there for about a five-minute stretch. It put us in a position that we realized we can play with this team and we can score.

Jamie Reit had a career-high 16 points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.

Farley finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.

McKaela Schmelzer also reached double figures with a career-best 12 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Steph Kostowicz flirted with a triple double, finishing with nine rebounds, eight points and career-high eight assists.

Khayla Livingston led the way for Cleveland State with 24 points, connecting for six of her team's season-high 13 made three-pointers.

After Milwaukee's big comeback that spanned the second and third quarters, it was a back-and-forth ball game in the forth. CSU took a 64-61 lead with 5:22 to play, only to see Schmelzer respond with four straight points to put Milwaukee back up one with 3:18 left on the clock.

Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League honoree Ashanti Abshaw scored the next five for the Vikings, giving her team a 69-67 edge with 2:29 to play before Farley took over.

The senior drilled back-to-back three's from the left wing in just over a 30-second span to give UWM a 73-69 lead with 1:32 to go. From there, the Panthers would ice the game away from the free-throw line – finishing 15-of-18 from the charity stripe as a team.

That all came after a slow start by UWM coupled with a blazing early going for the Vikings saw them go up 33-18 less than 15 minutes into the contest.

Milwaukee didn't blink, with Lindner putting the team on her back with both her scoring and energy level before Reit scored 11 straight for the Panthers in a 3:34 span late in the first half.

UWM carried that hot shooting into the third quarter to finish with a 25-6 run that spanned both halves.

As a team, the Panthers finished shooting 51.8 percent from the floor – the fourth time this season they have shot better than 50 percent for the game. Milwaukee also won the rebounding battle, 40-28, and outscored the Cleveland State in the paint, 30-20.

The 2,610 fans marks the eighth-largest home crowd in Panther history.

Milwaukee will wrap up its brief two-game home stand Saturday by welcoming Youngstown State to the Klotsche Center for a 2pm contest.
