Red-Hot Northwestern Stops Panther Win Streak At Four

Panthers rack up 10 blocks in the close loss

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee volleyball team saw its four-match win streak come to an end at the hands of red-hot Northwestern University Friday night in the opening match of the DePaul Invitational from McGrath-Phillips Arena.

UWM (5-3) was right in it the whole way, but just couldn't find the finishing stroke down the stretch in the tight loss, 25-16, 25-23, 25-22.

With the win, Northwestern improves to 6-1 on the year.

"This was a very close match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Anytime you play a Big Ten team, they're physical and they're very competitive. I felt like we did a lot of really good things, but we just didn't do quite enough."

Mykie Olsen led the way defensively for Milwaukee with 10 digs, while sophomore Lexie Uselding added nine more.

Jenn Dore dished out another 30 assists in the tight match.

Four Panthers tied for the team lead in kills with seven, while Bridget Wallenberger had five blocks and Carmen Heilemann had another four.

Symone Abbott led the way for the Wildcats with 16 kills.

After Northwestern claimed the opening set, Milwaukee showed it was up to the task in set two. Tied at 16, Louise Kiekhofer started a Panther run with a big kill and a block by Wallenberger and Dore made it 19-16 UWM. Back-to-back kills by Jess Kalous and Wallenberger put the Panthers up 23-20, but NU was able to find a way to eek out the second set.

The Panthers again showed their fight in the third. Down 20-14, Heilemann started an impressive run with one of her seven kills. She then joined up with Kalous for a big block to force Northwestern's first timeout. Another block – this time by Dore and Wallenberger – closed things to 24-21 to force NU's final timeout of the frame. But, Milwaukee's comeback effort ran out of time in the deceptive three-set loss.

UWM did claim a 10-7 edge in blocks in the match and limited Northwestern's talented hitting to just .200 or lower in both of the final two sets.

Milwaukee returns to action Saturday for a pair of matches, starting off with a 10 am match against host DePaul – a match that will be streamed live online on the DePaul Blue Tube.

"We'll watch this next match (tonight) to scout our next two opponents," Johnson said. "We'll see where we can find a strategy against Army and DePaul. I think we can learn a lot from this match and we can execute better tomorrow."
