Phoenix Take Down Panthers

Wallenberger hits career-best .579 in the loss

GREEN BAY, Wis. Bridget Wallenberger hit a career-best .579 but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team fell, 3-0, to Green Bay from the Kress Center Friday evening.

Green Bay (7-7, 3-0 Horizon) did just enough in the first two sets before going on a run in the third for the win, 25-22, 29-27, 25-13.

"We just didn't have enough fight tonight," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We were right there in the first two sets, and just couldn't find a way to get over that hump and put them away. There were still some positive things to take away, but we have to be better going forward."

Wallenberger led the way for Milwaukee with 11 kills with a career-high hitting percentage of .579. She also added four blocks. Caitlin Schultz also reached double-digits in kills on the night with 10.

Jenn Dore dished out 33 assists and four blocks on the night, while Mykie Olsen led the defense with 11 digs.

Lydia DeWeese finished with a match-high 16 kills in the win for the Phoenix.

After falling behind early in the opening frame, the Panthers battled back. A Wallenberger kill cut the GB lead to just 23-21, but Milwaukee's comeback effort ran out of time in the close first set.

The second went quite similar, with Milwaukee (8-9, 1-2 Horizon) staying neck-and-neck with the league leaders the whole way. Down 12-7, Milwaukee rattled off five straight to force a GB timeout. Neither team could establish any separation in the tight set, heading well into extras before the Phoenix found a way late for the 29-27 nail biter.

The Panthers never quite got on track in the third as Green Bay walked out with the win.

UWM returns to action Sunday, taking on UIC at 2 pm from the Klotsche Center.
