Flames Outlast Panthers In Five

Wallenberger, Kalous each turn in career performances

MILWAUKEEJess Kalous and Bridget Wallenberger of the Milwaukee volleyball team each turned in career performances in a tight, 3-2 loss to UIC Sunday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (8-10, 1-3 Horizon) rallied from down 1-0 and 2-1 against the second-place Flames (12-5, 3-1 Horizon), only to see the visitors find a short run at the end in the extremely close match, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12.

"I will say that we were way better than Friday. We were competing, but just for every point," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our middles we really good today. That was a really important thing to see. They both were very strong today. Jenn was able to find them, that means our passes were good enough to set them, and I'm really proud of that."

Wallenberger led all players with 24 kills on the day, tying her career high set last year. The sophomore also had a match-high seven blocks.

Kalous also had a tremendous showing, racking up a career-high 17 kills to go with five blocks of her own.

Kylie Wilks tallied the 11th double-double of her young career with 10 kills and 15 digs to lead the way defensively. Three other players reached 10-plus digs on the day as well for Milwaukee, with Mykie Olsen, Lexie Uselding and Kailynn Mongan all notching 13.

Jenn Dore dished out another 47 assists, in addition to her eight digs and three kills.

Manuela Conte had 16 kills and 22 digs to lead the way for UIC.

After dropping the first set, the Panthers trailed 23-22 late in the second. The Panthers showed their fight with three-straight points, with back-to-back kills from Caitlin Schultz and Kalous to spark the rally.

UIC claimed the third and Milwaukee again had to show their grit in the fourth. Down 19-18, UWM flipped the script with a 5-0 rally that featured two kills and a solo block by Kalous to send this one to the decisive fifth set.

Much like the first four, the fifth frame was close the whole way, with neither team able to generate much separation. Milwaukee closed the gap to just one on a block by Kalous and Dore to make it 13-12. The following point proved to be one of the longest rallies of the entire match, with UIC able to find a way to get the ball down for the point and the win.

"At the end of the day we have to get kills in critical moments, and we didn't," Johnson said. "We need more from our outsides and from our right sides. We're going to continue to push for that. That team (UIC) played very well today and didn't back off. They made it hard to win. It was better than the other day, so it was an improvement and that's what we're looking for. We look for improvements every time we play, but it was a loss, so it's tough."

Milwaukee will look to bounce back with their first true road swing of the conference season next weekend, taking on IUPUI and Northern Kentucky, starting Friday.
