Wilks’ Double-Double Not Enough Against Jaguars

Panthers play Northern Kentucky Saturday at 3pm Central

INDIANAPOLISKylie Wilks turned in her second straight double-double and her fourth of the season but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball team fell, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21, Friday evening at IUPUI from The Jungle.

"We're a young team and this is a learning moment for them," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Last week, our offense was working well, but our defense wasn't the sharpest. Tonight, we played well defensively, but the offense just wasn't in sync. We need to continue to work and be able to put both of those together for a whole match, and that's what we'll work on heading into tomorrow."

Wilks led the way for Milwaukee (8-11, 1-4 Horizon) with 10 kills and 11 digs for her second double-double in as many matches and her fourth of the season.

Mykie Olsen led all players with 18 digs on the night, while Jenn Dore dished out 29 assists.

Haley Hoffman was nearly perfect for IUPUI (8-10, 4-1 Horizon) with a team-high 10 kills on just 12 attempts.

Milwaukee never quite got on track in the first, but showed resilience in set number two. Tied at four, UWM used a 5-0 run to establish an early lead after a kill from Louise Kiekhofer. The two teams would trade runs the rest of the way, with the Jaguars getting the last one off to take the 2-0 lead into the break.

IUPUI jumped out to an early lead in the third and forced Milwaukee to play catch up the rest of the way. The Panthers responded well, cutting the lead to just one multiple times. A kill by Jess Kalous closed things to 8-7 and a smash by Wilks cut the gap to 13-12. UWM continued to keep things close but never were able to quite get over the hump in the loss.

The two teams finished even in digs on the night at 51 apiece, while IUPUI claimed the edge in kills at 47-35.

Up next, the Panthers continue their road swing with a trip down the road to Northern Kentucky for a 3 pm Central match on Saturday.
