Panthers Suffer Heartbreaker At NKU

Wallenberger finishes with 17 kills

Highland Heights, Ky. – Haley Libs had 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the Northern Kentucky volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Milwaukee Saturday afternoon from Regents Hall.

Milwaukee (8-12, 1-5 Horizon) was neck-and-neck with the Norse (8-7, 4-2 Horizon) the majority of the way, before a tough call against their favor decided things late, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23.

"Our team was very strong and very energetic today. There were just a few times the ball didn't bounce our way and that proved to be the difference," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "This is tough, because I'm really proud of how well we responded from yesterday, but that's probably not what people will see that in this result."

Bridget Wallenberger led all players with 17 kills for Milwaukee Saturday. The sophomore hit .361 for the match to go with her team-high five blocks.

For the third-straight match, Kylie Wilks registered a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs.

Caitlin Schultz also reached double-figure kills with 14 on the day.

Mykie Olsen tallied a match-high 19 digs Saturday, while Kailynn Mongan added another 13 and Lexie Uselding another 11.

Jenn Dore dished out 49 assists in the close loss.

After dropping set one, Milwaukee bounced back in set two. A back-and-forth set the whole way, the Panthers were able to find their separation late. Tied at 22-all, Jess Kalous started the run with a kill. Wilks then closed things out with back-to-back points to even the match up at 1-1.

The Norse took set three, but UWM once again responded well in the fourth. An early run put the Panthers up 6-3 after a kill by Schultz. The two teams traded the lead multiple times the rest of the way, with Milwaukee tying things up at 23-23 late in the match. That's when a call went against UWM, giving the Norse the edge for the winning point.

The two teams finished the match even in kills at 56-apiece. The Panthers actually out-dug NKU on the day, 66-58, while the Norse finished the match with 11 aces.

Milwaukee returns to action next Saturday, playing host to Youngstown State at 4 pm from the Klotsche Center.
