Efficient Panthers Sweep Penguins

Wilks with career high 19 digs

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team made quick work of Youngstown State for a convincing 25-19, 25-15, 25-23 win inside the Klotsche Center.

"It is good to win – we'll start there," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I thought our team was pretty efficient today and I like to see that.

"Our block was pretty efficient. We didn't get a ton (in the stat sheet), but they (Youngstown State) were hitting around it and we were able to get a lot of digs because of it."

Kylie Wilks secured her fourth consecutive double-double in impressive fashion, tallying 11 kills to go with a new career-high 19 digs.

Mykie Olsen also had 19 digs for Milwaukee (9-12, 2-5 Horizon) to tie for the match high Saturday.

Jenn Dore notched a double-double of her own with 44 assists in the smooth win to go with 11 digs.

Offensively, Bridget Wallenberger led the way with 15 kills. Jess Kalous also reached double figures with 10, while Louise Kiekhofer added eight.

Margaux Thompson had a team-high nine kills to go with nine digs to lead the way for the Penguins (7-15, 0-8 Horizon).

Home for the first time in two weeks, the Panthers gave their home fans plenty to cheer about right out of the gates. Caitlin Schultz had a pair of early kills, with Jenna Miller getting in on the attack, as well, as UWM started the match with a 9-3 burst. The Panthers would keep YSU at arms length the rest of the way for the smooth first-set win.

The second set was even more convincing than the first. Kalous got things rolling early with two big kills sandwiching a Wallenberger ace for a quick 7-3 edge. A pair of kills by Wilks headlined a 4-0 run to double-up Youngstown State at the midway point, 16-8. With things well in hand, Wallenberger closed things out with another smash for the 2-0 lead at the break.

The third was much closer, featuring 10 ties and three lead changes. Trailing 19-18 late, Milwaukee flipped things around with a 4-1 run. YSU hung around, tying things back up at 22-all. But the Panthers wouldn't be denied, with a block by Wilks and Wallenberger, followed by a kill by Wallenberger to close things out.

The Panthers had noticeable advantages in nearly every category, claiming the edge in kills (51-31), assists (46-27) and digs (68-55).

UWM is right back at it on Sunday, hosting Wright State for a 4pm match at the Klotsche Center.
