Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Wright State

Olsen tallies career-high 24 digs

MILWAUKEE – Four players reached double-digit kills for the Milwaukee volleyball team in a thrilling 3-2 win over Wright State Sunday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (10-12, 3-5 Horizon) came out strong before adjusting to a resilient WSU (9-12, 3-5 Horizon) team for their second-straight win, 25-14, 29-27, 21-25, 24-26, 15-8.

"Winning is great, but I'm more just proud of this team for executing the game plan," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "A lot of that is just trust – trusting your teammates, trusting what your coaches are saying. That is what was neat to see. Trust in those critical moments. I'm really proud of the team because it did take some guts. We haven't had a lot of success lately and now we're back. I'm excited to see what the future holds."

Kylie Wilks spearheaded the way for Milwaukee with her fifth-straight double-double, tallying season highs in both kills (21) and digs (17).

Bridget Wallenberger had 19 kills and seven blocks. Caitlin Schultz added 16 kills off the bench, and Jess Kalous also reached double-digit kills with 10.

Mykie Olsen led the way defensively with a career-best 24 digs. Freshman Kailynn Mongan added another 15, while Jenn Dore and Lexie Uselding each had nine.

Dore also just turned in a career performance, dishing out an incredible 63 assists in the win – a new career high.

Katie Klusman was the leader for Wright State on the day with 17 kills and seven digs.

Milwaukee methodically pulled away from WSU for an easy first-set win. Leading 6-5, the Panthers went on a 9-3 tear to open things up an put themselves in the driver's seat early. WSU clawed back to within 19-14, but UWM rattled off six-straight points to close out the first in convincing fashion.

The second was much closer, featuring seven ties and 16 lead changes. Neither team could solve the other in regulation, so the set went to extras. Tied at 27, the Panthers forced a side out before Wilks sent her team into the break with a 2-0 lead after an impressive kill that brought the crowd to its feet.

While things were close in sets three and four, Wright State was able to bounce back and tie things up, setting up the decisive fifth set.

Milwaukee was more than up to the challenge. The Panthers came out on fire, scoring the first three points and nine of the first 11, as the offense was rocking right from the start. The Raiders kept things interesting, closing to within 11-8. But, UWM removed all doubt with the next four points to make it a perfect 2-0 weekend at home.

The Panthers held the edge in nearly every statistical category, including kills (74-60), digs (80-53) and assists (67-58).

Up next, UWM returns to the road for a road trip to Oakland and Cleveland State next weekend, starting Friday.
