Volleyball Fights For Big Win Over Oakland

Kiekhofer tallies double-double in the start

MILWAUKEE – Three Panthers tallied double-digit kills to help spark the Milwaukee volleyball to a big 3-1 win over Oakland Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Time and again, the Panthers (8-8, 1-1 Horizon) proved up to the task in the win, 25-23, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18.

"This team is very talented, so the fighting needs to happen within a match. Really, that's what we tried to do today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I was excited to see the turnaround and the fight today. I'm really proud and hopefully we can continue that as the weeks come."

Making her first start of the season, sophomore Louise Kiekhofer notched her second career double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills, while hitting .381 for Milwaukee.

Kylie Wilks just missed a double-double of her own with a season-high 18 kills and nine digs to go with four aces.

Bridget Wallenberger had a monster day with a season-high 20 kills on .400 hitting to go with another five blocks.

Jenn Dore was impressive while running the offense with another 55 assists on the day to go with four blocks and three digs.

Mykie Olsen led the way defensively with 16 digs, while Kailynn Mongan added another nine.

Darien Bandel had 17 kills for Oakland (5-9, 0-2 Horizon) in the loss.

It was a back-and-forth opening set, going right down to the wire. Tied at 22-all, Wallenberger put the Panthers up one before Sara Kartalovic finished things off with one of her four kills on the day to take the first set.

Oakland jumped out early in the second, forcing the Panthers to play catch up the rest of the way. Milwaukee stayed close the whole time, but could never get over the hump as the match was tied 1-1 at the break.

After the break, UWM came out on fire. The Panthers scored the first six points of the set and quickly went up 10-2 on a kill by Kiekhofer. Milwaukee would keep the Golden Grizzlies at arms' length the rest of the way in the emphatic third-set win.

Things were tense in the fourth, tied at 16-16 midway through. From there, UWM once again showed the fight coach Johnson was talking about, finishing things out on a 10-2 run to claim the win.

"We just talked about continuing to be aggressive and continuing to fight," Johnson said of her team's performance after the break. "When you're already this many weeks into a season, it's usually about tweaking little things. Whoever is going to run with that are the teams that are going to win more than the others. We're just trying to get better every day."

Milwaukee finished with a decisive edge in kills Saturday, 60-43, while also serving up 11 aces as a team.

The Panthers are back in action Friday evening with a trip up the road to Green Bay at 6pm.
