Defending Champs Rally To Sneak Past Milwaukee

Wilks hits .583 in the close loss

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team jumped all over Cleveland State in the first set, only to see the two-time defending league champs rally for a tight 3-1 win in the Horizon League opening from the Klotsche Center.

UWM (7-8, 0-1 Horizon) hit .400 in the opening set and still finished with a .226 attack percentage but came up just short, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 15-25.

"Cleveland State (8-4, 1-0 Horizon) is the best team in our league, so we were expecting a tough match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We came out strong, they made some adjustments and we were having a hard time fighting back. Statistically we were pretty close. It just

Jenn Dore was impressive at the setter position Friday, dishing out 45 assists and just missing a double-double with nine digs and two blocks.

Kylie Wilks also nearly tallied another double-double with a match-high 16 kills on just 24 attempts for a career-best .583 hitting percentage. She also had eight digs on the night.

Jess Kalous continued her strong hitting to start the year, finishing with 15 kills and a .429 hitting clip to go with three blocks and a career-high five digs.

Mykie Olsen also did well for Milwaukee, tallying 11 digs and four assists.

Gina Kilner led the way for Cleveland State with 53 assists in the win.

Milwaukee blitzed the defending champs in set one and had tremendous success. Tied at 11-all, the Panthers went on a 5-1 run and never looked back. A kill by Dore made it 20-16 and an ace by Bridget Wallenberger put Milwaukee up 23-17 before closing things out on a Caitlin Schultz kill.

The second was a back-and-forth affair right from the start. A kill by Wallenberger made it 20-20 late, but CSU was able to find their footing late to tie things up.

UWM fell behind early in the third, 7-2, and was forced to play catch up. They proved up to the task, evening things up at 12-12 after a block by Wallenberger and Louise Kiekhofer. A kill by Kiekhofer continued to keep things close at 22-20 late, but the Vikings again found a way down the stetch.

Cleveland State then used two big runs in the fourth set to complete the comeback win in the conference opener.

It's a quick turnaround for the Panthers, hosting Oakland Saturday afternoon at 4 pm from the Klotsche Center.
