Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough Against NC State

Wallenberger notches career-high 10 blocks

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Playing their fourth match against a 20-plus-win team from one year ago, including their third in the last 24 hours, the Milwaukee volleyball team turned in a strong defensive effort but came up just short in a deceptive 3-0 loss to NC State Saturday afternoon from Cliff Keen Arena.

UWM (7-7) racked up 17 blocks in the three setter but never quite got things going offensively in the 25-19, 27-25, 25-16 loss.

"This was a challenging stretch for us, going up against four teams that are all very good right in a row," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had a really nice game plan today and Jenn executed it well, we just couldn't quite get the offense going. This (NC State) was another very physical team, and that's something we need to continue to work on dealing with. There were still plenty of good things to take away from this weekend and I'm confident this will help us get where we want to be at the end of the year."

Jenn Dore dished out a match-high 29 assists in the final match of the weekend. The sophomore also had a team-high 10 digs for her first double-double of the young season. Dore - who was solid for Milwaukee all weekend - was named to the all-tournament team after the match.

Caitlin Schultz had eight kills to lead the Panther attack.

Defensively, Bridget Wallenberger had a career-high 10 blocks – including five solo – which is just one shy of third place in school history for a three-set match.

Bree Bailey led the way for NC State (5-6) with 10 kills.

After dropping the opening set, Milwaukee continued to show it has the talent to battle with the top teams in the country in the second. Down 15-12, UWM rattled off an 8-2 run that featured four blocks to jump ahead 20-17. After a Wolf Pack response, Milwaukee forced the match to extras before NC State found a way to score two straight to take the lead and the eventual win.

Milwaukee's defense limited the Wolf Pack to just .189 hitting, with the 17 blocks equaling the most for UWM in a match since notching 19 in a five-set win over Valparaiso in 2012.

The Panthers now get ready for conference play, opening up against defending Horizon League Champion Cleveland State Friday at 6 pm from the Klotsche Center.
