Panther Rally Comes Up Short At No. 21 Michigan

Schultz leads Panthers with 13 kills

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Carly Skjodt had 16 kills to pace No. 21 Michigan past the Milwaukee volleyball team, 3-0, Saturday morning from Cliff Keen Arena.

The Panthers (7-6) stayed toe-to-toe with their opponents from the vaunted Big Ten conference but came up just short, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17.

"I'm happy with the effort we had today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Obviously Michigan is a very talented team and presented challenges for us, but I like what we brought to the court today. Caitlin was especially strong for us today. They (Michigan) didn't have an answer for her at the net. We just had too many unforced errors to win a match like this."

Caitlin Schultz had 13 kills to lead the Panther attack on the day.

Jenn Dore dished out a match-high 31 assists, and Mykie Olsen had eight digs – also a match high.

Trailing in set one, the Panthers put together a furious rally. It started with a kill by Kylie Wilks to cut the gap to 22-15. Back-to-back kills by Schultz followed, with an ace by Bridget Wallenberger making it 23-18. Dore then tallied an ace of her own to make it 24-21, forcing a U-M timeout. Makenzie Mroczenski had a solo block after the timeout, but Michigan was able to find the final point to avoid the upset in the first.

Milwaukee continued to show they weren't afraid of the host Wolverines in set two. A kill by Wilks capped a 4-0 Panther run early on, and the Panthers stayed within striking distance the whole way, with a kill by Wallenberger making it 22-18 late. Michigan finished the set on a 3-1 run though, to take the 2-0 lead at the break.

Wilks gave UWM an early lead in the third to make it 7-6, only to see Michigan make a big run to reclaim the edge. A block by Wallenberger and a kill by Schultz made it a quick turnaround at 14-10, but the Wolverines were too much down the stretch.

Milwaukee did register eight blocks against their Big-Ten opponents, with three each coming from Jess Kalous, Wallenberger and Mroczenski.

The Panthers finish out the Michigan Challenge at 4 pm Central Saturday with a showdown with NC State.
