Volleyball Sweeps Past Bulldogs

UWM goes 2-0 on the day

CHICAGO – After a grind-it-out win earlier in the day, the Milwaukee volleyball team flipped the script with a 3-0 sweep of Samford Friday evening as part of the Rambler Challenge from Gentile Arena.

Milwaukee (4-2) needed extras in the opener before finding its rhythm and never looking back in the decisive win, 27-25, 25-17, 25-21.

"This was a definitive match tonight," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our focus was to be efficient tonight compared to this morning, and I think we achieved that goal. We had a big edge in digs and our hitting was great – especially for it being the second match in the day and dealing with some challenges in that area earlier today.

"We're happy with how things went today and we're looking forward to playing again tomorrow."

Jenn Dore once again had a strong showing, guiding the Panther attack with 37 assists.

Mykie Olsen had 17 digs, with Kylie Wilks right behind at 16 to give Milwaukee an impressive 57 in that category in the night cap.

Caitlin Schultz led the way offensively with 12 kills, while Bridget Wallenberger also reached double figures in the three-setter with 10. Wallenberger also chimed in with four blocks, with newcomer Carmen Heilemann adding another three.

Krista Boesing had 18 kills to lead the way for Samford (1-3).

Milwaukee saw a big lead slip away in the first, only to regain their footing just in time for the exciting win. Up 19-11, the Bulldogs made a big run and actually led 25-24. But, UWM regrouped and scored three-straight, capping things off with a kill by Schultz.

From there, the Panthers never looked back, using an 8-0 run in the second to pull away early before steadily marching to the win in the third for the sweep.

UWM claimed the edge in nearly every statistical category on the night, including a 9-3 advantage in blocks and a .252-.113 nod in hitting percentage.

Milwaukee will look for its fourth-straight win tomorrow when it takes on host Loyola in its final match of the tournament at 5 pm. That match will be streamed live on ESPN3
