Defense Sparks Comeback Win For Milwaukee

Four players reach double-digit digs

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee volleyball team overcame a slow start, battling back for a 3-2 win over Fairfield University Friday morning in the first match of the Rambler Challenge hosted by Loyola at Gentile Arena.

Despite falling down two sets to one, the Panthers showed their heart with a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-23- 19-25, 25-15, 15-12 win.

"That is a very good Fairfield squad. They're going to win a lot of games this year, so that was a great win for us," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Bridget and Caitlin did a great job at the net today and Jenn did a nice job of setting the offense. The hitters just needed to keep working and working and I'm proud of how they battled.

"And defensively we were very sharp today. Mykie had 18 digs and the whole team really contributed in this one."

Bridget Wallenberger led all players with 19 kills to go with nine digs. Caitlin Schultz also had double-digit kills with 17, while Jenn Dore dished out 57 assists to run her season total to 233 through just five matches.

Mykie Olsen led the Panther defense with 18 digs. Kylie Wilks had another 14, while Kailynn Mongan added 13 and Lexie Uselding another 11.

Milwaukee also had a strong day defensively at the net, with four players tallying at least three blocks on the day, led by Jess Kalous with four.

Skyler Day led the way for Fairfield with 16 kills.

After falling down 2-1, the Panthers bounced back in a big way in set four. Tied 4-4, Milwaukee rattled off seven-straight points on its way to a 9-1 run to grab a commanding lead. UWM used another run – this time of the 6-0 variety – to double things up at 24-12 before Louise Kiekhofer closed things out with a match-tying kill.

Milwaukee quickly jumped out in front in the deciding fifth. A block by Carmen Heilemann and Kalous put the Panthers up 8-4 and Kalous used one of her eight kills on the day to close things out and clinch the win.

UWM plays its second match of the day at 8 pm Friday, taking on Samford as part of the Rambler Challenge.
