League-Leading Vikings Squeak Past Panthers

Milwaukee again takes doubles point in close home match

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee tennis team got out to a hot start before suffering an extremely narrow 4-3 loss at the hands of league-leading Cleveland State Saturday from River Glen Elite.

UWM (9-13 overall, 3-5 Horizon) jumped out to an early lead against the Vikings (13-9, 7-1 Horizon). After dropping the first doubles match of the day, Milwaukee responded in a big way. Nicole Clarke and Eszter Zador helped the Panthers bounce back with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 match to even things up.

In the deciding top pairing, Alysa Straub and Berta Masdevall Masip came through huge for the Black and Gold with a 7-6 (7-4) winner to take the doubles point and the early overall lead.

Straub carried that success over into singles play with an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth spot.

Labina Petrovska then gave the Panthers their third point of the day with an impressive performance at the top spot. The junior fell early only to bounce back in big way for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

From there, Milwaukee couldn't get over the hump as Cleveland State – battling to stay atop the league standings – managed to squeak out the win.
