Peters Pitches Panthers To Victory In Opener

Career win No. 300 for Doffek

NILES, Ohio - Jay Peters did not allow an earned run in a brilliant complete-game effort to lead the Milwaukee baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

The victory came in the opener of a doubleheader for the Panthers (13-22, 3-11 Horizon League), topping the Penguins (11-27, 6-13 Horizon League) to mark career victory No. 300 for head coach Scott Doffek.

Peters (5-1) was impressive, making it three appearances in a row with a victory, throwing 114 pitches in the complete-game effort. He gave up just four hits, while the two runs he did allow scored of the unearned variety after an error helped YSU on the board.

The Penguins did come back to earn the split, getting the 5-1 win in game two.

"I thought we played well in both games," Doffek said. "Game one, Jay was just outstanding. We ended up with 15 hits and lined out about 10 times … just a well-played game."

Doffek becomes just the second coach in the history of the baseball program – dating back to 1957 – to reach that number (Jerry Augustine holds the record at 347 from 1995 to 2006).

"Game two, their kid did a nice job on the mound," Doffek said. "Early in that game we hit a bunch of balls hard – three of which turned into double plays. We were down three starters from the lineup and I thought some inexperience showed in some at-bats today. It was good to see Adam throw the ball well, outside of a couple of pitches, he was good today. Baseball is cruel sometimes and it was today."

In game one, Peters retired the first 10 batters of the game and faced the minimum through the first five innings. He finished the afternoon with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Milwaukee grabbed the 1-0 lead early, scoring a run on a triple by Jeremy Wright in the second inning. Billy Quirke doubled that advantage in the sixth, coming through with a clutch two-out hit to plate Trevor Schwecke, who had singled with one out.

UWM made it 3-0 in the top of the seventh and it was Wright again, singling on the first pitch he saw with two outs to make it 3-0.

That run proved beneficial, keeping the Panthers in the lead after the Penguins scored a pair of unearned runs in the last of the seventh.

Mike Ferri provided a key base hit, coming through with a two-out pinch-hit single that scored two runs in the eighth to close out the scoring in the 5-2 win. Peters closed strong, retiring the final seven batters of the day.

Wright finished with three hits and two RBI. Quirke, Schwecke, John Boidanis, Ben Chally and Dylan Detert all had two-hit games.

In game two, the Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Mike Jordahl scored on a wild pitch. YSU responded, getting a pair in its half of the frame to take the lead and never looked back.

Jeremy Quinlan (3-0) picked up the win with a complete game of his own, limiting the Milwaukee bats to five hits, Jordahl had a pair while Boidanis, Wright and Daulton Varsho added one each. Quinlan did not walk a batter and fanned seven.

Up next, it's a quick drive to take on Oakland in a twinbill tomorrow. First pitch of game one is set for 11 a.m. CST.
