Panthers Fall In Twinbill At Oakland

Tuesday at Iowa up next

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Austin Schulfer struck out a career-high 10 batters but a late rally sent Oakland University past the Milwaukee baseball team by a final score of 9-6 Sunday afternoon at Oakland Baseball Field.

"Game one, Austin was outstanding," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "He gave us an opportunity to win a game and we couldn't capitalize."

The Panthers (13-24, 3-13 Horizon League) were unable to push back, falling to the Golden Grizzlies (10-27, 7-9 Horizon League) by a final score of 12-6 in game two of the doubleheader.

"Game two we didn't do much of anything well," Doffek said. "This team is really banged up and exhausted right now. We have 14 conference games left and we hope to get a little healthier by next weekend and get on a run. More than anything, just play and compete the way we are capable of doing."

Schulfer was throwing well in the opener, walking just one while striking out those 10 batters in 7.0 innings. He allowed a single earned run in his outing.

Milwaukee led briefly midway through, taking a 2-1 advantage on an RBI-single by Trevor Schwecke in the sixth inning. A pair of unearned runs tilted the game back to Oakland at 3-2 in the bottom half of the frame. However, Mike Jordahl knotted the game at 3-3 on a double in the eighth before OU had a huge eighth of its own, plating six runs on six hits, helped along by a pair of UWM errors.

Daulton Varsho launched a three-run home run to center in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Varsho finished 3-for-5 as the Panthers collected 12 hits. Schwecke was 2-for-4 and Jeremy Wright was 2-for-3. Ben Hart paced the Grizzlies with a 3-for-4 outing.

In the nightcap, Oakland answered a 1-0 Milwaukee lead with three of its own in the bottom of the first. UWM again responded, going back in the lead at 4-3 on RBI's from Schwecke and Ben Chally while scoring another on an error.

Milwaukee would tack on, adding another on a sac fly from Jordahl and another on an error to take what looked like a commanding 6-3 advantage midway through the contest. From there it was all OU, plating five in the fourth and two more in the fifth to turn the tables.

Brandon Parr (1-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs in 4.0 innings. Varsho added another three-hit game. Schwecke added to his big day with two hits and three runs scored. Ben Chally (2-for-4) and Wright (2-for-3) came through with multi-hit efforts.

Baseball returns to action Tuesday, taking on Iowa on the road. First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
