Panthers Suffer Heartbreaker Against Flames

Team to play Valpo Saturday

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee tennis team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off a late push in a 4-3 loss to UIC at XS Tennis Center Friday.

Once again, the Panthers (8-12, 2-4 Horizon) dominated at the doubles level against the Flames (14-5, 5-1 Horizon).

Alysa Straub and Berta Masdevall Masip continued their run of dominance, cruising to a 6-1 win at the top spot. That marked the duo's ninth win of the season and their fifth in conference play.

At the third doubles spot, it was much of the same for Nicole Clarke and Eszter Zador. The freshmen teamed up for a 6-4 win – their eighth of the spring season.

In singles play, Masdevall Masip added another point for the Panthers with a victory at the No. 3 spot. The newcomer took down Melika LeBlanc in straight sets.

Straub gave Milwaukee its third point of the day with a 'W' at the No. 4 spot. The senior battled back-and-forth for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 winner – her 16th of the year.

The Panthers battled hard the rest of the way – including forcing three-set matches at the first, second and sixth spots – but couldn't quite pull off the upset of the host Flames in the narrow 4-3 loss.

It's a quick turnaround for UWM, heading to Valparaiso for a 12:30 contest at Valparaiso Saturday.
