Panthers Blank Penguins In Pitchers’ Duel

Team runs winning streak to four games

MILWAUKEE - Jay Peters and Elijah Goodman combined on a two-hit shutout and Daulton Varsho knocked in a pair of runs to break up a scoreless battle and help the Milwaukee baseball team claim a 3-0 victory over Youngstown State at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (12-19, 209 Horizon League) and Penguins (8-23, 4-10 Horizon League) were matched in a pitchers' duel Friday, with the offenses combining for just eight hits on the day.

"Today was a different story," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "Elijah got off to a pretty good start and then, unfortunately, had a setback with his shoulder and we had to go to Jay on short rest. Obviously, you saw what he did – two singles over seven innings – he did a great job."

Peters (4-1) was fantastic in relief, coming on to start the third inning after Goodman could not continue due to injury.

"He did a good job of mixing four pitches in-and-out and kept them off balance," Doffek said. "That's the way he has been throwing the ball lately, so it was good to see it continue."

Peters struck out four of the first seven batters he faced, allowing just a single up the middle that he nearly gloved and an infield single for the only two hits allowed by UWM on the day.

Peters walked two and struck out six in his 7.0 innings of work. Goodman had two shutout frames to his credit, with no walks and two K's before having to leave after warming up to start the third.

Dylan Detert came through with a great afternoon, going 2-for-3 while scoring twice. Varsho finished with the one hit and the two runs batted in, while Chris Kelly had the other RBI, executing a perfect two-out bunt in the eighth to tack on an insurance run.

The red-hot Milwaukee offense did just enough against Collin Floyd (1-6), who suffered the loss despite walking one and fanning eight in the complete-game effort.

"He was really good, we had a hard time," Doffek said. "We found a way to get some pressure on him and then Varsho drops in the double. We were very fortunate."

Three of UWM's six hits came in the sixth inning. Detert's second double led off the frame and Billy Quirke walked with one out. After a strikeout, Jeremy Wright beat out an infield single to short to load the bases. Varsho then dumped a well-placed shot just in front of a diving left-fielder, with two runs scoring on the play and a possible third being thrown out at the plate to end the rally.

Peters finished strong, working around a two-out walk in the eighth and a one-out walk in the ninth to close it out.

Up next, the teams close out the series Saturday, with a first pitched scheduled for 12 p.m.
