MILWAUKEE - Adam Reuss took a no-hitter into the fifth inning but a run in the ninth and another in the 10
th helped Youngstown State University escape with a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee baseball team in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Â
The Panthers (12-20, 2-10 Horizon League) looked poised for the weekend sweep of the Penguins (9-23, 5-10 Horizon League), only to see the visitors come up with a run in their last at bat to force extra innings and tack on the winner in the 10
th on an error.
Â
"The energy was very positive in the dugout all game, even after we got behind," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "The team kept fighting and put us in position to win. We just didn't take advantage."
Â
Milwaukee loaded the bases in its half of the 10
th inning, but Joe King (1-5) induced a ground ball to end the game, closing out 4.0 strong innings of relief to earn the victory on a very windy and warm day at the Hank.
Â
Hanging on to a slim 1-0 lead on a monster home run by
Daulton Varsho in the first inning, Reuss saw the no-hitter and the lead vanish in the YSU fifth. The Penguins mounted a rally of four hits to plate four runs, helped along by a pair of walks to claim the 4-1 advantage.
Â
Just like that it was Milwaukee's answer, punching back with four of its own in the bottom of the frame – all coming with just a runner on second base and two outs. With a run in and an error in the field putting runners at second and third, Varsho was intentionally walked. A balk plated the next run and
John Boidanis made the Penguins pay with a line-drive single up the middle that gave the Panthers the 5-4 lead.
Â
It stayed that way until the ninth. Kyle Benyo pinch-hit to lead off and singled. He went to second on a sac bunt and raced home on an RBI-single off the bat of Nico Padavan.
Brandon Parr came up huge later in the frame, posting back-to-back K's after YSU had the bases loaded and just one out.
Â
Milwaukee had a chance in its half of the ninth after a leadoff error gave them a runner at second with no outs. But, the Penguins were able to get the lead runner on a sac bunt attempt and then scored with two outs in the 10
th on what could have been the last out of the inning.
Â
"We didn't execute on offense," Doffek said. "They tried to give us the ball game in the ninth with that two-base error and we failed to move the runner. They get out of that inning and then we just didn't execute on defense."
Â
An error, single by
Dylan Detert and walk to
Billy Quirke loaded the bases for a last gasp, but that was how it ended.
Â
Parr (1-3) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out two. Reuss ran into control issues, finishing with five walks and four K's in his 4.2 innings.
Â
Milwaukee banged out 10 hits, led by a 2-for-3 day from
Mike Jordahl. Varsho finished with a home run, double and scored twice, while Detert went 2-for-5.
Ben Chally also had a multi-hit day at 2-for-4.
Â
Padovan had two hits and drove in two to lead YSU.
Â
Up next, the Panthers return to the road, starting a five-game road swing at Northwestern Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
