EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Daulton Varsho hit a pair of home runs and the Milwaukee baseball team led on three different occasions, but could not close out the victory in falling, 6-4, to Evansville Saturday afternoon at Braun Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (5-5) led the Purple Aces (3-7) by scores of 1-0, 2-1 and 4-3, only to see a three-run sixth inning propel the home team to the win in game two of the doubleheader.
Â
"We beat ourselves in the second game with some walks and they capitalized," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We had runners on all day just couldn't come up with that big two-out hit. When you don't stack quality at bats, that's what happens. We need to find our mentality in the box. Our approach was way too passive and, unfortunately, that cost a game."
Â
That completed the EU sweep following a 2-0 victory in the opener.
Â
"Their kid was special today (in game one)," Doffek said. "He had a plus-slider working. We barreled a handful of balls that could of fell in and produced for us but couldn't find a hole. Schulfer was very good and gave a great start as well."
Â
Milwaukee got off to a solid start in game two, taking a first-inning lead on Varsho's blast to right field. Evansville responded immediately, but it was Varsho again in the third, taking one deep to center field to make it 2-1.
Â
Mike Jordahl drove in a run in the fourth to extend the advantage to 3-1, but the Purple Aces would knot the score again with two in the fourth.
Devin Rybacki put UWM ahead 4-3 in the fifth with a sac fly, only to see Trey Hair's double flip the deficit and Milwaukee could not rally the rest of the way.
Â
Varsho finished 3-for-5, with Chally ending his day at 2-for-3.
Jeremy Wright,
Cole Heili and
Chris Kelly all added base knocks.
Â
Walks hurt the start of
Adam Reuss, who had six of them in 3.0 innings of work.
Brandon Parr (1-1) suffered his first loss of the young season.
Â
The Panthers went from almost being no-hit in the opener to nearly pulling one out late. Without a hit into the ninth, Chally was down to his last strike with two outs before getting hit by a pitch. Heili then ended the drama, sending an 0-2 pitch safely into right field to break up the no-no. That brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but UWM could not do any further damage in the 2-0 loss.
Â
Austin Schulfer (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite pitching very well. He allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings, striking out three.
Â
Patrick Schnieders (1-1) picked up the win, allowing the one hit while striking out 10.
Â
These two teams wrap up the series with a single game Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
