Doubles Sweep Sparks Win Over Huskies

Panthers head into spring-break trip with a big boost

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee tennis team used a sweep in doubles play to spark a big 5-2 win over Northern Illinois Friday afternoon from River Glen Elite.

"I'm really happy with how we played today," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "We had great energy last weekend, but then we hit a wall along the way. Today, we had that great energy again, but we fought through that wall and made this a complete match."

UWM stormed out of the gates to set the tone early in doubles action. The freshmen tandem of Nicole Clarke and Eszter Zador started things off with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot before 6-4 wins at the top two spots to complete the sweep.

In singles play, Berta Masdevall Masip started things off with a win over Abbie-Jade Riley, 6-1, 6-3, to make it 2-0 Milwaukee.

Alysa Straub played a brilliant match at the No. 4 spot and was in control the whole way for a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Zador then clinched the team victory with a W at the No. 2 spot of singles play. Going up against Brodie Walker, Zador started strong before regrouping in the second set for a 6-2, 7-5 win.

With the match already in hand, Hayley Marshall added one more for good measure with a grueling 7-6 (1), 6-4 win at the third spot.

Milwaukee now leaves the state of Wisconsin for the first time this season, heading on its annual spring break trip that starts next Friday, March 17 with a neutral-site match against St. Bonaventure.
