Milwaukee Puts Up Tough Fight At Marquette

Straub, Marshall impressive in top doubles match

MILWAUKEEAlysa Straub, Hayley Marshall and Nicole Clarke all claimed wins for the Milwaukee women's tennis team in an impressive showing against Marquette before falling, 6-1 Wednesday evening from Helfaer Tennis Center.

"We came out with great fight tonight, and that really showed," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "Alysa and Hayley played a fantastic match against a very tough duo from Marquette. And Nicole getting a point for us tonight was big. Marquette is obviously a very talented squad and we can definitely learn from and build off this match."

Straub and Marshall started the match off with an outstanding showing at the No. 1 doubles spot. The senior tandem jumped out to a 3-0 lead right out of the gates before winning 6-2 over Silvia Ambrosio and Fleur Eggink who were previously undefeated on the season.

MU was able to grab the doubles point, though, after a 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot and a very tight 6-3 match at the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, Clarke put together a complete match at the No. 6 spot. The freshman, playing just her second singles contest of her young career, powered past Lesley Foe for a 6-3, 6-3, straight-sets win to give UWM a point.

Milwaukee put up strong efforts at the other singles spots, but the Golden Eagles walked away with the win.

The Panthers continue their busy week with two more matches this weekend, starting Friday at 1 pm when Northern Iowa comes to town.
