WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Austin Schulfer and
Brandon Parr posted a pair of impressive pitching performances to lead the Milwaukee baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Michigan Sunday at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida.
Â
Schulfer did not allow an earned run in his start, scattering just three hits in 7.0 innings of work. Parr came on in relief in the opener, pitching the final 6.0 scoreless frames to pick up the victory.
Â
"Game one we were fortunate," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "They made a mistake and we made them pay. Parr did a great job coming on in the third inning and he was just really good from there on out."
Â
At the end of the day, the Panthers (3-3) posted victories over the Eagles (2-7) by final scores of 3-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
Â
"In game two, we were able to string a couple hits and scratch a few runs across early in the game," Doffek said. "You could see the hitters starting to relax today. Moving forward, we need to do a better job with runners on base and I am confident we will. Both Reklaitis and Sommers did what they are supposed to do to – close it out. Tomorrow we need to come out here looking to get greedy and close the trip on a high note."
Â
Game one on the day was a pitcher's duel up to the end. Scheduled for seven innings, the game was still a scoreless 0-0 deadlock at the end of it. The eighth inning provided the difference, with all three coming across.
Â
An error started it, but Milwaukee added insurance tallies on RBI-singles by
Dylan Detert and
Devin Rybacki.
Â
Parr (1-0) did the rest, really settling in after coming in to start the third inning. He allowed just three hits, forcing the Eagles to put the ball in play and having his defense make plays behind him. He walked one and struck out three.
Â
Adam Reuss started, striking out three in his 2.0 innings.
Â
Milwaukee had eight hits in the opener, led by a 2-for-3 showing by
John Boidanis. Mike Mioduszewski had three of the four hits for EMU in the contest.
Â
Schulfer (2-0) won his second straight start to open the season, allowing just three hits in 7.0 innings of work. He walked one, struck out four and gave up just three hits in the second game of the day.
Â
The offense slowly built him a lead, adding single tallies in each of the first three innings.
Daulton Varsho and
Billy Quirke each doubled in the first, with Varsho staking Schulfer to a quick lead.
Â
Boidanis added an RBI-single in the second and
Cole Heili did the same in the third. Eastern Michigan finally got on the board in the sixth with an unearned tally, but UWM would get back to 4-1 in the eighth on an RBI from
Mike Ferri.
Â
The ninth got a little interesting, but
Jake Sommers came on with the go-ahead run at the plate to record his first save of the year.
Â
The Panthers did pound out 12 hits, led by two-hit outings by Quirke, Varsho and
Matt Quartel. Every spot in the order had at least one base hit.
Â
The teams meet again tomorrow, as UWM closes out its quick trek to Florida with a 9:30 a.m. CST start against the Eagles.
