WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Milwaukee baseball team scored nine runs in the first three innings to jumpstart a 15-4 victory over Eastern Michigan Monday morning at the RussMatt Invitational.
Â
The Panthers (4-3) collected 14 hits against the Eagles (2-8), completing the three-game sweep over the past two days.
Â
"That was a good team win," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "A lot of contributors up and down the lineup today … and it starts with a quality outing from Jay (Peters). He put up zeros early in that ball game and we were able to jump out to a nice lead. It was good to see some of these hitters start to come alive."
Â
Daulton Varsho had two hits and drove in three runs and
Billy Quirke also knocked in three, had two hits and scored three times.
Â
Dylan Detert provided the decisive blow, a pinch-hit two-run home run to left center field that invoked the tournament's 10-run rule and ended the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning at 15-4.
Â
John Boidanis also homered, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Matt Quartel (2-for-4) and
Trevor Schwecke (2-for-5, 2 runs) added multi-hit mornings.
Â
The offensive fireworks made a winner out of
Jay Peters (1-0). He ended up working the first 5.0 innings, striking out four and allowing four runs. He took a shutout into the fifth before allowing a run.
Â
Clayton Uselman (2.0 scoreless IP, 0 BB/2 K),
Reed Blake (0.2 IP/1 K) and
Alex Fischer (0.1 IP) combined to shutout the Eagles the rest of the way.
Â
With nobody on and two outs in the first inning, UWM started a rally that set the stage for the day. Varsho and Quartel collected back-to-back singles and a passed ball plated the first run. Following an 11-pitch walk induced by
Cole Heili, an infield grounder by
Devin Rybacki was mishandled, making it 2-0.
Â
Milwaukee then exploded for five more runs in the second. Quirke doubled in a pair and Schwecke singled up the middle to make it 5-0. Varsho and Rybacki each added RBI's.
Â
It was Varsho again in the third, with his triple plating two runners, making it 9-0 and putting the game out of reach.
Â
Milwaukee returns home today before opening the month of March against Evansville. The Panthers and Purple Aces open a four-game set Friday at 3 p.m.
