Panthers Denied In Extra Innings

Team drops 2-1 heartbreaker

BEAUMONT, Texas - Jay Peters allowed just one run in 7.0 innings but the Milwaukee baseball team was unable to help him out, eventually falling 2-1 to Lamar University on a walk-off fielder's choice in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Back Stadium.

The Panthers (1-3) had plenty of baserunners, but stranded 11 on the day as the host Cardinals (4-0) claimed the championship of their own weekend classic.

Peters scattered six hits, giving up the lone run in the fourth inning. He walked just one and struck out seven batters in his first start of the 2017 campaign.

"What a shame to waste that pitching effort," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "Jay was really good today. He was sharp on both sides with three pitches."

Cole Heili had two of UWM's five hits on the day. Mike Ferri, Daulton Varsho and Mike Jordahl also had base hits.

Down 1-0, the Panthers tied the game in the fifth. Billy Quirke walked, went to third on Varsho's base hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Chally.

It stayed that way until the 10th. The Cardinals put runners on first and third following a hit batter, sac bunt and single before winning in walk-off fashion. With the infield in, a high chopper to shortstop brought a play at the plate, with the runner sliding in just ahead of the tag to end the contest.

Milwaukee had the bases loaded in the first inning but could not find a way to score. The squad also had runners in scoring position with less than two outs three other occasions. A pair of runners getting picked off also did not help the cause.

"We had so many chances with runners all over the bases, but just could not execute in the box when we needed to," Doffek said. "I leave discouraged by the results of the first weekend, but was very encouraged by the prospects of this season. I can't wait to get back to work and watch these guys compete next weekend."

Up next, the season continues with a trip to Arizona to take on the Brewers February 24. Then, it's off to Florida for the RussMatt Invitational, taking on Eastern Michigan for three games Sunday and Monday.
