Clarke’s comeback secures Panther win

MILWAUKEE – Nicole Clarke continued her winning ways to help the Milwaukee women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Northern Iowa Friday afternoon from River Glen Elite.

The Panthers jumped out on top to claim the doubles point and then battled at all six spots for a hard earned win over a tough Northern Iowa squad.

"This is a good win for us," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "Northern Iowa is a good squad and they have some really talented individuals. No matter if they were up or down though, our team never stopped fighting and I'm so proud of them for how they played today."

Building off their big doubles win at Marquette on Wednesday, Milwaukee's top pairing of Alysa Straub and Hayley Marshall continued their run of strong play with a smooth 6-1 win to start the doubles action. Eszter Zador and Labina Petrovska then won at the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point and giving UWM the early lead.

With lively singles matches at all six spots, Berta Masdevall Masip was the first to finish. The freshman made quick work of her opponent at the No. 5 spot for a 6-1, 6-4 win to give Milwaukee the 2-0 lead.

After Northern Iowa tied things up with victories at the top two spots, the Panthers responded.

Marshall finished off Astrid Santos at the third spot in a 6-4, 6-2 match, and Nicole Clarke continued her hot streak with a come-from-behind, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the six spot to clinch the win for the Panthers.

It's right back at it for Milwaukee, taking on Bradley Saturday afternoon at 1 pm from River Glen Elite.
