Panthers Suffer Rare Home Loss

Win streak snapped at eight

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team suffered a rare home loss Sunday, 83-68, to Marquette at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (8-3) saw their eight-game win streak come to a close and fell for just the third time all season despite shooting a season-high 53 percent from the floor.

Marquette – which was receiving votes in this week's top-25 – improves to 6-4 on the year.

"This was a very physical game, but we knew that it would be coming in," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We prepared our team for this, but we just had way too many mental lapses to be successful. We shot 53 percent for the game, just didn't get nearly enough shots on goal."

Jenny Lindner led the way for Milwaukee in the loss with a team-high 13 points to go with six rebounds.

Jamie Reit, Bailey Farley and Steph Kostowicz all also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points apiece.

Allazia Blockton had the hot hand for Marquette with a game-high 29 points on 12-17 shooting.

After a quick 8-2 start by Marquette, the Panthers responded nicely. Farley got it going with a three-pointer followed by another triple from McKaela Schmelzer and a layup by Lindner and Milwaukee showed they could answer.

Ryaen Johnson beat the halftime buzzer to cut the deficit to 41-33 at the break for UWM.

After an MU run to open up the third quarter, the Panthers once again responded. Brandi Bisping and Farley each drilled a pair of threes in the closing minute of the third to bring the crowd of 874 to its feet for the Black and Gold.

That carried over into the fourth with back-to-back bombs from Alyssa Fischer just 30 seconds into the frame to cut the score to 61-52. Kostowicz started to find her rhythm and Farley notched an and-one play to draw within eight with 8:25 left on the clock.

Marquette was able to respond, with big shots from Blockton down the stretch.

UWM returns to the court Thursday for its non-conference finale, heading to Chicago's Southside for a matchup against Chicago State at 7pm.
