UWM Cruises To 25-Point Win On The Road

Panthers close non-conference schedule at 9-3

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team used a 23-4 run early in the second half to blow the game open on their way to an 84-59 win over Chicago State Thursday evening from the Jacob Dickens Center.

UWM shot a season-high 59.3 percent (35-59) from the floor and led for the final 37 minutes to finish the non-conference schedule with a 9-3 record.

"I thought we came out with a high level of focus, especially on the offensive end. We really picked apart their defense right from the start and I was really impressed with how our team really locked into the scouting report," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I credit our team. It's the end of finals week and we came out with a ton of energy and I'm really proud to finish off the non-conference slate 9-3."

Bailey Farley and Steph Kostowicz tied for a team-high 17 points on the night, while Jenny Lindner was right behind with 16. Kostowicz finished just shy of another double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.

Alyssa Fischer and Lizzie Odegard each scored seven off the bench, and McKaela Schmelzer stuffed the stat sheet with five assists, four points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Jaye Two Bears came off the bench for three points and two assists in six minutes and a total of 11 different players scored for Milwaukee in the 25-point win.

Tyeshia Bowers and Phylicia Johnson shared the hot hand for Chicago State (0-14), finishing with a combined 41 of the team's 59 points.

After a back-and-forth opening few minutes, the Panthers quickly established their will and scored on five consecutive possessions for an 11-0 run to jump ahead 16-7 early. CSU was able to hang close, trailing just three at 23-20 after the first quarter thanks to the hot shooting of Johnson who connected on her first four three-point attempts.

The Panthers locked down defensively from there, holding the Cougars to just seven second quarter points. Sydney Staver found Kostowicz to close the half as UWM led 38-27 at the break.

From there it was all Milwaukee.

Leading 45-37 early in the third, the Panthers could do almost no wrong in rattling off a 23-4 run over a 7-minute span to blow this one open. Lindner found a streaking Akaylah Hayes before netting a layup of her own at the 8:47 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 68-41.

The lead stretched to 30 after Kelsey Cunningham picked her opponent's pocket and went coast-to-coast to make it 82-52.

UWM finished with 23 assists on their 35 made field goals, 11 steals and dominating 42-19 edge in rebounding.

"I thought we moved the ball well tonight. We're a very unselfish team," Rechlicz said. "Our team really doesn't care who gets the gets the glory or who scores, which is really fun to be a part of. All they care about is each other and winning."

Milwaukee will now have a few days off for Christmas before returning to open up Horizon-League play at Northern Kentucky Thursday, Dec. 28.
