Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Milwaukee Women Take Down Wisconsin At Kohl Center

Panthers have now won eight in a row

MILWAUKEEBailey Farley finished with a game-high 16 points – nine coming in the fourth quarter – to help the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 67-64 win over the University of Wisconsin Thursday evening from the Kohl Center.

The Panthers (8-2) – now winners of eight in a row – once again turned in an impressive defensive showing, limiting the Badgers (7-6) to just 36 percent shooting for the game – their third-lowest performance of the season.

The win is the second straight for Milwaukee over the Badgers and marks the first time in program history UWM has taken down two Big Ten teams in the same year after defeating Northwestern 66-57 on Dec. 3.

"Obviously this is a great atmosphere to come and play in the Kohl Center," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I'm so proud of who we are as a program right now. Our team is led by these four seniors that just really want to win. They are just so determined and it's really fun to coach them.

"I give a lot of credit to Wisconsin. They did a great job of taking away Jenny and Steph. They're obviously really big - they've got some 6'4"s - and that's tough when we're getting double teamed. They really packed it in. But I was incredibly proud of Bailey Farley, Jamie Reit, Lizzie Odegard came in and hit some huge threes - it was nice to see her getting into the flow again - and McKaela to come in and get eight defensive rebounds and nine rebounds total...those little tiny details are what win you big games like this."

Farley led all players with 16 points, drilling a pair of huge threes early in the fourth quarter and giving Milwaukee the go-ahead layup with 57 seconds left in what proved to be the difference.

Jamie Reit finished with a season-high 14 points to go with five assists and three rebounds.

Jenny Lindner put together a big performance of 11 points and eight rebounds, while Steph Kostowicz was also once again important with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Lizzie Odegard came off the bench for a huge eight points and three rebounds, while freshman McKaela Schmelzer tied for the team high with nine rebounds.

Courtney Fredrickson led Wisconsin with 11 points and 10 rebounds, including a three pointer at the buzzer.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Badgers used a 9-2 run to take just their third lead of the second half at 61-59 with 2:00 left on the clock.

UWM didn't panic, with Kostowicz earning her way to the foul line to tie things up at 61-all.

On the next possession, Farley got a great entry feed from Kostowicz and muscled in her sixth field goal of the game with 57 seconds left to give Milwaukee a lead it would never relinquish.

The Panthers then closed the game out at the free throw line, going 16-22 for the game from the charity stripe.

Milwaukee opened the game with stout defense right out of the gates. That, coupled with six straight early points by Reit gave Rechlicz's squad a quick 8-4 lead at the first media timeout.

After UW briefly grabbed a 14-13 lead to open the second quarter, Milwaukee again responded in a big way with a 13-2 run, connecting on five consecutive trips down the court at one point for a 26-16 lead with 5:13 left in the half.

UWM again led by 10 early in the second half after Reit splashed another triple for a 37-27 edge just 2:21 into the second half. Wisconsin battled back, taking their first lead in the period at the 3:23 mark, but Milwaukee once again responded, this time with a Kostowicz and-one play before finishing the third with a 45-42 edge.

The final stats show Milwaukee once again finished with the rebounding edge on the night, 43-40, led for nearly 32 minutes and finished with 16 assists on 22 made field goals on the night.

"It's awesome to see how many assists we had this game," Rechlicz said. "We've had our trouble with turnovers this season…to have 16 in this environment is not terrible, but to follow it up with 16 assists just shows that our team is really unselfish and they care more about winning than they do their own individual glory."

Milwaukee has now won eight straight games, its longest winning streak since the 2005-06 team rattled off 12 in a row on their way to the NCAA Tournament. Win number eight comes just days after UWM was voted into the Mid-Major Top-25 – marking the second straight season the Panthers have earned a spot in the coaches' poll.

"We take one game at a time. We don't treat any game different from any other," Rechlicz said. "We treated Wisconsin just like we treated IPFW. We plan on treating Marquette just like we've treated the rest of them. Again, it's all about the preparation and the focus. I have a great staff that is putting in a lot of time in the scouting reports. They are really focused on making sure our team understands what's going to happen."

The Panthers now return home for their final home game of 2017, hosting Marquette Sunday afternoon at 4pm from the Klotsche Center.
