Win Streak Hits Seven As Milwaukee Handles Fort Wayne

Kostowicz finishes with game-high 19 points

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team never trailed in cruising to a 60-48 road win over Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon from Gates Sports Complex.

A total of 11 different players scored for UWM (7-2), which used a 17-3 run between the first and second quarters to establish a big lead early before coasting to their seventh consecutive win.

"It's a great thing, anytime you can come on the road and find a way to win," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Our team came in incredibly focused. I thought our discipline at the start of the game was excellent. Our starters were really prepared. I'm a little concerned about how we finished the game, and that's something we've got to work on. We're trying to find those next set of rotations and we need some people to step up."

Steph Kostowicz led all players with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. She also hauled in a team-high six rebounds to go with three blocks and three assists in just 26 minutes.

Jenny Lindner was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and finished with eight points and five rebounds in just 20 minutes.

Jamie Reit scored seven to go with five rebounds, while Akaylah Hayes and Alyssa Fischer each finished with five points off the bench.

DeJour Young had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for Fort Wayne (3-7).

Milwaukee got things going right out gates. Bailey Farley netted the first two points of the game, finishing with a strong showing in front of a big hometown crowd. McKaela Schmelzer then attacked the basket for a quick layup, followed by buckets from Kostowicz and Hayes for a quick 8-2 lead.

After a Mastodon three that cut the Panther lead to 13-8 with 1:46 left in the first quarter, UWM exploded offensively with a 17-3 run to take complete control of the game.

Lindner answered right back for Milwaukee with a three-pointer of her own, followed by a three-point play from Brandi Bisping. Ryaen Johnson then opened up the second quarter with a layup, before a triple by Reit and an and-one play from Lindner made it 30-11 less than three minutes into the second quarter.

The Panthers led by 16 (37-21) at the break and stretched that to 24 points (51-27) after a three by Fischer en route to another convincing win.

UWM was once again dominant defensively, holding Fort Wayne to just 33-percent (17-51) shooting for the game, just one game after the Mastodons shot 70.8 for the game Friday - the third-highest shooting percentage for a game in the NCAA this season. Despite a cold fourth quarter, Milwaukee still finished shooting 47 percent from the floor for their seventh consecutive win.

"It's all through defense," Rechlicz said of the win streak. "That's something we're really trying to pride ourselves on right now is the defensive end and letting the offense kind of come to us. We have a big week ahead of us, starting to prepare for finals and then we've got Wisconsin and Marquette – two of the in-state schools – so we've got to really lock in and find our focus and our motivation for these next two games."

The Panthers next play Thursday in Madison against the Badgers, scheduled for 7pm from the Kohl Center.
