Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huge Second-Quarter Run Propels Panthers To Big Win

Defense holds NDSU to just four points in second, fourth quarters

MILWAUKEE – One year ago, the Milwaukee women's basketball team needed a late fourth-quarter run to hold off a pesky North Dakota State squad.

On Friday, UWM would need no such heroics.

The Panthers used a 33-4 run between the end of the first quarter and into halftime to blow this one open early for a 74-38 win over the Bison in front of 387 fans inside the Klotsche Center.

The 38 points by NDSU (5-3) is the third-fewest allowed by a Milwaukee (4-2) team in its Division I history.

"I'm impressed with our team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We fought and we came out with a sense of focus and determination tonight. Anytime we get an opportunity to play at home is really big for us; to be able to be in front of our fans and our family. The atmosphere was great in here tonight. I thought the energy from the bench to our fans was really good and our team just came out with a lot of heart."

Jenny Lindner had the hot hand during that decisive run and finished with a game-high 13 points to go with five rebounds. Steph Kostowicz added another 12 points, eight assists, three steals and two blocks, and Jamie Reit also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points and five rebounds.

Bailey Farley and Alyssa Fischer each netted eight on the night as 12 different Panthers found their way into the scoring column in the home win.

After cold shooting by both squads to open up the game, UWM got things going late in the first, spearheaded by Reit. The sophomore hit a contested jumper from the elbow to close the gap to 12-11 before drilling a three from the top of the key on the next possession to finish the opening frame on a 7-0 run for Milwaukee.

That carried over into the second where the Panthers could seemingly do no wrong.

Lindner got five quick points of her own before another jumper by Reit to make it 21-12 UWM, forcing an NDSU timeout just two minutes into the frame.

The run continued with a pair of buckets by Farley before Ryaen Johnson got in on the action to make it 34-14. Reit hit another three on the next possession before Fischer closed out the first half with triple from the wing to give Milwaukee 40-16 edge at the break – the fifth-largest halftime lead in school history.

Milwaukee's lead swelled to 30 a few minutes into the third quarter after a fast-break layup by Farley to make it 48-18.

After a Bison run to pull within 23, the Panthers refocused defensively and limited NDSU to just four points in the fourth quarter. Akaylah Hayes' jumper late in the fourth gave Milwaukee its largest lead of the night at 36, proving to be the final difference in this one.

"(Our defense) was a big part of it tonight," Rechlicz said. "Our offense fuels off of when we get stops. Once we started getting those stops, our offense just took off after that.

"It's fun when you have different people each night that can step up. That just goes to show how deep we are this year."

UWM finished the game with a dominant 53-28 advantage in rebounding, matching its largest margin (+25) from all of last season.

The Panthers also finished with 13 assists and just 11 turnovers on the night, while generating 10 steals and forcing 15 turnovers.

It's a quick turnaround for Milwaukee, heading to Evanston, Il. Sunday afternoon for a 2 pm contest at Northwestern from nearby Beardsley Gymnasium.
