Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Milwaukee Takes Down Northwestern, 66-57

Farley leads the way with a career-high 24 points

EVANSTON, Ill.Bailey Farley poured in a career-high 24 points and Steph Kostowicz turned in a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Milwaukee women's basketball team grabbed a big, 66-57 road win Sunday against Northwestern from Beardsley Gymnasium.

Milwaukee (5-2) led nearly the full 40 minutes for their fifth-straight win, taking down their second Big Ten opponent in the past 12 months.

"This was really fun" Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Our team is just so determined right now and really focused. The heart that they are playing with is incredible. I really believe that they just care about one another and truly are prepared every time they step out on the court. That's led by our upperclassmen leaders. We've got four seniors that have sheer determination every time they step on the court."

Farley led all players with a career-high 24 points on 8-11 shooting, including draining a team-high three three-pointers and going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.

"I was absolutely impressed with Bailey Farley tonight," Rechlicz said. "She's in this position of being labeled a little bit only as a shooter. A lot of people got to see tonight that she's a lot more than that."

Kostowicz was also big, notching her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She also dished out a team-high five assists to go with a pair of blocks and steals.

Jenny Lindner battled through early foul trouble to finish with seven points and five rebounds, while Brandi Bisping came off the bench for five points and two steals in eight minutes.

Abi Scheid tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the way for Northwestern (5-4).

UWM jumped out early and held the lead until Northwestern was able to draw even late in this one. The Wildcats used a 9-0 late in the third quarter to tie things up at 44-44 and kept things close, once again drawing even at 52-all with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers didn't panic, calmly responding with four points from Farley and three by Kostowicz to reclaim the lead at 59-55 with 1:31 left.

Farley then forced a turnover and Bisping forced her way into the post with the shot clock winding down to stretch the lead to 61-55 with less than a minute to go.

UWM would then ice the game from the free-throw line with five points from the charity stripe in the waning moments, finishing 19-26 from the line as a team for the game.

"That was a goal for the game (getting to the free throw line)," Rechlicz said. "They (Northwestern) don't go very deep, where we do with our bench. It's one of those situations where I knew we had to get to the free throw line as much as possible and we needed to be the aggressors.

"They locked into the scout. Again, determined is the word that I would use (for our team). They truly believe that they can beat anybody right now."

Milwaukee once again won the rebounding battle, 42-32, finished with a 24-22 edge in points in the paint and a decisive 12-4 advantage in second-chance points.

After the opening basket went to NU for a 2-0 lead, the Panthers never trailed the rest of the game.

This marks the second win against the Big Ten in the last 12 months for Milwaukee, taking down Wisconsin, 80-63 early last season.

Up next, the Panthers return home for a Thursday night contest against Illinois State at 7pm from the Klotsche Center.
