Jags Cool Off Panthers

Panthers close out home slate

MILWAUKEE – IUPUI cooled off the Milwaukee volleyball team's hot start with a 3-1 win over the Panthers Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (12-16, 5-9 Horizon) came out on fire against the league-leading Jaguars (15-12, 11-3 Horizon), but couldn't maintain that for the whole match in the loss, 25-17, 21-25, 17-25, 19-25.

"There's a reason IUPUI has won as many games as they have this season. They were just better today," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We started great. I thought Jenn and Bridget played at a high level. We just need to be better as a whole for every play throughout matches like this."

Jenn Dore again ran a smooth offense with 50 assists to go with 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Bridget Wallenberger continued her hot streak with a match-high 21 kills on an impressive .457 hitting percentage. Caitlin Schultz and Jess Kalous each chipped in with eight kills apiece on the attack.

Defensively, senior Mykie Olsen once again led the way with 22 digs on the day, while Kylie Wilks added another 16.

Gabby Fisher led the attack for IUPUI, finishing with a team high 12 kills on just 23 attempts.

Riding the momentum after yesterday's big win, the Panthers came out flying high, scoring six of the first seven points in the match. Milwaukee kept its foot on the gas, pushing the lead to 18-11 after a solo block by Wallenberger before Kalous closed it out with a smash for the opening win.

The Panthers couldn't quite match that same level of intensity going forward. IUPUI used a 9-2 run midway through the second to separate themselves and tie things up at the break. In the third, Milwaukee was back just 15-14 before the Jags went on a 7-1 run, and in the fourth it was a four-point swing late in the match that proved to be the difference.

UWM actually finished with more kills in the match (58-54), more digs (64-59), more assists (56-50) and more aces (6-5).

Milwaukee will now hit the road with some work to do next weekend, heading to Wright State and Youngstown State for the final two matches of the regular season, starting Friday.
