Wallenberger Leads Panthers To Key Win Over Norse

Sophomore finished with 23 kills in three-set victory

MILWAUKEEBridget Wallenberger had 23 kills, Mykie Olsen had a career-high 25 digs and the Milwaukee volleyball team picked up a vital, 3-0 win over Northern Kentucky Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (12-15, 5-8 Horizon), needing a win to stay in the hunt for the conference tournament, came up huge with the straight-sets win, 26-24, 25-23, 28-26.

"There was a lot on the line, but our team responded really well," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I felt like there was a game plan and a belief tonight that we wanted to stay positive and composed the whole match and it looked like that happened, even though each set was only separated by two points. It really didn't feel (that close) on our side."

Wallenberger was money for Milwaukee all night long, racking up 23 kills while hitting an outstanding .429. The sophomore finished just one kill shy of both her career high and the program record for most kills set in a three-set match, with Chrissy Schurla's 24 kills from a three setter in 1999 still standing as the top mark.

Caitlin Schultz was big off the bench for the Panthers, finishing with nine kills on just 14 attempts for a .429 percentage.

Olsen once again set a new career-high in digs with 25 to lead all players, also dishing out five assists on the night. Kylie Wilks and Lexie Uselding also reached double-digit digs on the night, with Wilks recording 12 and Uselding another 10.

Jenn Dore once again ran an efficient offense, finishing with 48 assists to go with another seven digs.

Trailing late in the opening set, the Panthers knew they needed to set the tone early in this one and responded in a big way. Down 24-22 and facing a pair of set points, Milwaukee rallied with four straight points to take the opener, with all four points coming off the attack by Wallenberger in what would prove to be a sign of things to come.

Tight the whole way in the second, UWM once again got some big performances late for the lead at the break. Up 23-22, Dore slammed home an errant NKU pass to set things up and Wallenberger then closed things out with another kill for the early 2-0 lead.

The Norse nearly mounted a comeback in the third, but the Panthers showed they were in the groove Friday night. Leading 22-17, NKU raced back to tie things up at 24-all. Knotted at 26-26, Wallenberger notched her 23rd kill to give Milwaukee the lead and then did things a little differently with a service ace – one of four by UWM on the night – to send Milwaukee home with the win.

The Panthers finished the match hitting .261 as a team and finished ahead of Northern Kentucky in kills (55-42), digs (62-48) and blocks (7-3) in the decisive win.

Milwaukee returns to its home court for the final time Saturday afternoon, taking on IUPUI for "senior day" tomorrow at 4pm from the Klotsche Center.
