Cougars Outlast Milwaukee In Preseason WNIT Showdown

Kostowicz with 11 points in the loss

NEW ORLEANS – Jasmyne Harris scored a game-high 22 points as Houston used a furious fourth-quarter effort to take down the Milwaukee women's basketball team, 74-59 Friday evening from Lakefront Arena in both teams' second game in the Preseason WNIT.

Milwaukee (0-2) came out strong and led 34-24 at the break, but couldn't hang on down the stretch against Houston's (1-1) increased pressure and improved shooting.

Steph Kostowicz led Milwaukee with 11 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Jenny Lindner finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

After a few minutes of both teams settling in, the Panthers quickly found their rhythm and got things going offensively. Kelsey Cunningham got things going with a pair of buckets sandwiching a three ball from Jamie Reit. Another early three from Reit and Milwaukee jumped out to a 12-8 edge. McKaela Schmelzer then found her stroke with five-straight as UWM ended the first up 17-10.

The Panther attack continued to get contributions from all over to start the second as Brandi Bisping drilled her first shot – a three from the top of the key – to make it 20-10. Akaylah Hayes then got in on the action with back-to-back baskets and a jumper by Lindner made it 28-14 with 3:59 to go in the first half.

UH cut the gap to 34-24 at the break before a tenacious second half that saw UWM lose its rhythm. The Cougars finished shooting nearly 53-percent in the fourth quarter – by far its best period in the contest – while the Panthers went cold and never quite got back on track.

Milwaukee will now play CSUN Saturday in both teams' final Preseason WNIT contest at 2 pm from Lakefront Arena.
